dark_alex's open edition hacked firmwares are the best. I perfer 3.03 oe-c to 3.10 oe myself. its FAR superior and easier than using 1.5 with devhook. you can download them here http://dl.qj.net/

there are many different firmwares that can be run on a PSP, but for what youre looking for; i'd definately start out with Dark Alex's OE-C...I currently run OE-C on my psp, and Love it!
instead of crashing your psp, or trying to learn how to flash a DXAR file.....maybe you should give Hex's Win-Installers a go...
easier than taking a PSP off of HOLD.....

Get 3.03 OE-C no questions asked, hands down the most stable/customizable CF out. I would recomend doing your research and doing it the old fashioned way by creating your own psar file. You'll figure it out. Takes like 20 minutes and is very easy to do. Don't get discouraged, It will turn out to be the best thing ever. You can start iso/cso/psx/homebrew etc... right from the game menu and you will be able to customize everything in the XMB. You will also have all the features that the official sony firmware has to offer. It even disables the network update for you, so you can't accidently update back to official. It also offers a recovery mode to unbrick if you semi brick your psp. The list goes on and on just do it.
Prepare to sweet a little your first time though (you'll see) HAHA
HAVE FUN!!!!!!!!!

What do you think of the eiffel56 1.53 FW BigCuz? it looks sexy to me, but i dont want to downgrade again if there isnt reason enough to do so...
(but i am willing to test it out if its worth it)
