I am trying to find out what is the amout that i can take a 4.7gb dvd movie and convert it into the lowest mpeg4 format without seeing any quility loss when watching it on a 40 inch HDTV

If you use the right tools, and if you backup the movie only, you'd be hard pressed to distinguish the difference.
