I am currently using Registry Mechanic as my registry cleaner, and it expires in a week. I've Googled and came up with several other cleaners that make RC look a little less than stellar. Not that I've been unhappy with RC, but I was just wondering if it's best for me. I downloaded five others' evaluation copies and ran them and came up with a vast difference in results. Max Secure found 1650 errors, ASO found 123, XP Repair Pro found 923, Registry Patrol found 74, Registry Mechanic found 5, and XP Medic would not even run at all.

It's rather confusing as to which program is truthful and will cause less havoc by "repairing" the bad entries. That's why I've come to the good members here, hat in hand. I'm asking for your opinions and suggestions on the best tool, whether it's one of the above mentioned ones or another.

Thanks in advance for the help and recommendations.

My personal favs

RegSeeker is a basic cleaner, but it is all you need.

NTRegOpt will defrag your registry.

Rootkit keeps an eye out for that sneaky shit from SONY and Bill G.

Edit
pcBaseline. I just noticed this one. Looks like it might be worth a try.

Thanks, 56delray. I tried regseeker and I had to make about four or five passes for it to clean everything. Seems it'll detect, but not clean everything on one pass. I have to let it find stuff again it didn't clean before, and clean a little at a time. Is that normal?

Most don't get everything first time.

We use this in the shop.. http://www.tune-up.com/products/tuneup-utilities/

Find a free one (torrents) or if you like it pay for it..
I don't like paying for basic tools but this kit is worthy every penny.

Well it should get most in one pass,
but if have not cleaned in a sometime it might take a couple passes. It really is not that big a deal.
Defraging your hard drive is more important.

I dont care for those that repair and or add tweaks of their own.
If you want tweaks I would just search 'registry tweaks XP'.
There are millions.

Look for a guide that explains what they do.
If you use one of the autofix-it programs keep a backup.
Sooner or later they will do something you will not like.

The two programs that i always use and they never fail are:

1. Ccleaner
2. Easy Cleaner

They will do what you want and both are freeware.
