Ive been hearing from alot of people that Metal Gear Solid is a great game so i deicided to get it, only to find there a whole bunch of them and different versions of the same ones. (eg: Metal Gear Solid 3 Snake Eater, VS Metal Gear Solid 3 Subsistence)
So i was wondering if some one could tell me where to start, as i dont want to start the game halfway through and not have a clue whats going on.
thx

Sure.

1. MGS1 for PS1 (you need a PS1 memory card to save)
2. MGS2 Sons of Liberty (the other version isn't worth it...)
3. MGS3 Subsistence (this is Snake Eater with extras)
4. MGS: Portable Ops for PSP

That is the official MGS story line. Play it in that order for the best effect. Before MGS came Metal Gear. You can read up on them in the MGS1 manual or actually play them because they are included in MGS3: Subsistence.

Make sure you buy Subsistence over Snake Eater, it has improved camera angle, duel mode, online mode, and more.

Games currently being played:
Devil May Cry 3:Dante's Awakening
MoH: European Assualt
Halo 2

hawaiiff are you crazy lol

metal gear solid sons of liberty is the best out of all of them

If you don't mind the graphics from old to new then its like this:

Metal gear solid: great story and game play gives you an idea of characters and what its all about

Metal gear solid 2 sons of liberty: in my opinion in great it is so fun and you can really interact with the environment. you can start on this game it will be easy to pick up the characters plus the weapons are explained again and this one is full of so much detail from the freezing of bombs to shooting a guards radio to disable it (very good shot)

Metal gear solid 3 snake eater: This game goes somewhere else you could start here its a different story and different characters plus a completely different environment. i bought this when it first came out and after 2 days i had completed it got completely bored of it and took it back.

So 1 is the best story

2 is the best graphics and how you can interact with the game

3 is s**t but thats my opinion others like it theres only one bit i liked

The only ones that are really connected are 1 and two but only with some characters and metal gear which as i said before is explain in both

Enjoy :D

Is MGS3 Snake Eater exclusively an online only game? I rented this and I couldn't get passed the first two screens. It was just an endless loop. I even returned it and exchanged it for a different DVD and same result. Am I missing something (besides online connection)?

You can kiss online play goodbye...according to konami, servers are going down on April 2nd. Could be an april fools joke but i doubt it.

lol i would advise you to read the manual because if you had you would have realised that the game uses the circle button instead of the x button to accept and the x button makes it go back

My brother told me something about Snake Eater. He said it takes place before MGS 1, which explains the different environment.

But its not even certain that the character is even solid snake i took this from IGN:

Stealth espionage action takes to the jungles in Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater for PlayStation 2 and PC. Set in what appears to be the 1960s, Snake Eater tells the story of a man who appears to be Solid Snake, but based on the time frame and information revealed in previous games, could be someone else altogether. Survival is a major theme throughout MGS3, as Snake must adapt to the harsh jungle environment, while at the same time battling enemy soldiers. Snake Eater promises a complex plot and vivid music score to rival a Hollywood blockbuster, along with and realistic graphics and high-definition sound that will take the series to new heights.

It is the first Snake. In Sons of Liberty, they refer to him as Big Boss. And the Solid Snake from MGS 1 is genetically made from Big Boss (Not the female one. They don't know what happened to the male one before her.). Big Boss wasn't.

big boss wasn't what??? you didn't finish the sentence lol

But that only proves what i was saying is correct that you can start the game from number 3 and be fine with the story and characters but like i said i didn't like number 3 i would have to really try hard to get into it but i just couldn't

But sons of liberty is awesome especially once you have completed the game then you can start having some fun with the game =)

Again, it was a rental and so it didn't have the manual. But thanks for the tip.

Big Boss wasn't made genetically like Solid Snake was.
I agree with you on Sons of Liberty, but I have Substance for Xbox. My bro has Sons of Liberty on PS2, and I got him Snake Eater for his birthday.

Big Boss was made as any other human was.

Edit: Also, when you put in one of your posts, you said that they don't know if it's even Snake, then I changed the subject from there. Get it? Or am I confusing you?

Boss: Co-creator of CQC, Mother to Ocelot, Naked Snake's mentor...

Naked Snake (a.k.a. Big Boss): Main character in MGS: Snake Eater/Subsistence.

Solid Snake(a.k.a. Iriquious Pliskin): 1st of 3 clones derived from the DNA of Big Boss

Liquid Snake(a.k.a. Master Miller from MGS1): 2nd of 3 clones, thought to be the weaker of the 3 but story reveals he is the strongest.

Solidus Snake (a.k.a. George Sears): 3rd of 3 clones, genetically the most balanced of the 3 snakes but first to suffer from the advanced aging from the cloning process.

Hopefully that clears up the confusion of who is who

its there clear as day, the product of both the sorrow and boss. Boss claimed to have lost the baby that was inside her, however, that baby was taken from her and eventually turned to the CIA/Patriot agent, ocelot.

God, I really need to get a life...

BTW, the first Boss(the woman) was just "Boss" without the "BIG" in front of it. They gave the title "Big Boss" to Naked Snake because they(U.S. Gov't) wanted to express that he is "better" than the Boss.

Metal Gear Solid was one of the awesomest games ever to be made...And there are so many things that you have to do that are so different to other games. Like get the frequency for Meryl from the CD case. That's wicked

If you read his post again, I could be wrong but I don't think he was comparing how good any of the games in the series were relative to one another. :)
