Cannot copy Disc for backup. Keep getting this message. Any help would be appreciated. Have read past forum threads and tried several things but nothing is working.

What all have you tried?
If you haven't already try using different discs - illegal disc error usually means the media codes for the discs you are using is not listed in the firmware of the drive.
The disc you are using are made ny Prodisc - are ok - but I would try Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden.
You can check the manufacturer of the laptop and see if there is a newer one.
1x is a bit to low to burn - when you get some other discs bump up the burn speed.

Thanks, I will buy some other discs. I had tried updating my firmware but was unable to. Don't really know what I'm doing as far as that goes. I had reduced the burn speed after failing at higher speeds.

I couldn't find any newer firmware - you might want try the maker of the laptop - see if one is available. Doubtful though.
Give some new discs a try - look for Verbatim.

Just got some Verbatim's and worked like a charm. Amazing that the brand of dvds can make such a difference. Thanks for your advice. Great suggestion.

Getting the firmware updated may help with being able to handle more different DVDs. Most drives support the better known manufacturers. Not many won't use the MCC and TY that's commonly under the Verbatim label. Yesterday another member here at AD was having problems with Memorex and Imation. Turned out it was with more known problem media, Daxon and CMC manufactured. So, your problem isn't that unusual. Try to stick with top brands that sell the better manufactured media. To check what you have, you can look in the Nero log or use the simple freeware program for that purpose, DVD Identifier. Who made your Verbatim?

Yep different brands can make all the difference.
As pacman said you can check the manufacturer of the discs. You can use Nero Tool. Just pop a blank in the drive go cd-dvd-speed then the disc tab.
The manufacturer is listed there.
If your in the States the single layer dvd's are more than likely made by MCC. If you in the UK you may just get the Taiyo Yuden made ones.
Taiyo Yuden is a great brand to use too. In the US you can get genuine Taiyo Yuden at good prices at supermediastore

I guess we've been getting different batches. I've gotten more of the TY discs (made in Japan). When I bought them at Sams they used to be manufactured by Ricohjpn (made in Taiwan). So, it pays to run a check even with Verbatim to see who manufactured the discs. That's why I put in the question. I was just curious which company manufactured the discs that were working.
Strangely enough, the member I suggested changing media had a NEC drive as well. They went with the Sony +R (manufactured by Sony) and they worked perfect on that drive. The made in Japan Sony +R are usually TY. Both are good. I've used a huge batch of the D21 Sony +R and haven't had a coaster yet from a disc flaw.
Many of the name brands, if you can find (made in Japan) on the label are a safe bet. Most are Taiyo Yuden or Mitsubishi, you don't get better than those 2. But with any purchase, it still pays to check the manufacturer. Last time out to Wally World they didn't have the made in Japan Sony, so I went with made in Taiwan (which work just as well). They're still being manufactured by Sony, so I remain a happy camper.

Yep, Verbatim and MCC. So from now on I will keep a close eye on who the manufacturer is. Any ideas how to burn faster with the drive I have. A friend of mine has an older drive but makes his movies in about half the time. Is taking me around 45min-1hr for the whole process now. Am I being too greedy or is it possible to optimized burn time. Thanks again.

If you are using Nero you can set it in DriveSpeed. Insert disk and Nero should register it and give you the various speeds it can burn the disk. Once that is done any time the disk is inserted those speeds will show up and you can use any of those speeds. If the burner can burn at 16X you can try burning at 8x first to see if there are any problems.

It would be interesting to compare your system resources to that of your friend. I've got an old PC, but it's faster than most new ones except the new Intel Core 2 Duo machines. So age doesn't have that much to do with it, system resources do, i.e. CPU and speed, RAM total and amount free, hard drive (hard drive speed, size, and free space), OS and file system, and media of course. Usually the burn speed isn't as much a factor as most people think. How much difference in time does it take to burn 4X compared to 8X, compared to 12X? If you're only looking at 5 to 10 minutes for an already lengthy backup process, you see what I mean.
I can burn faster than the 6X I use, but to me the relatively small time savings doesn't compare to the peace of mind knowing I'm not taking a chance on ruining the project. The chance of burn errors increase with speed. Burning is a personal thing though. If you want fast, burn as fast as your drive and media allow and back off when/if you get errors. If using verify, turn it off and do the burn in about half the time. (With a recordable you don't get to redo the job on the same disc even if there is an error.) I hope the few minutes saved don't have you continuously wandering about the project outcome. ;)
So the friend is doing his backups in 22 to 30 minutes. That is fast. I'm wandering what he has for PC resources including the HD configuration along with the software and it's settings. Your speeds are closer to the norm, especially if you're using the quality settings in Shrink, which a person should if the compression is very high. Without the use of those settings the program is faster, but qualilty may suffer. There's also programs faster than Shrink. There's a bunch of variables when you compare backup times. Even with my faster machine, it takes about 1 1/2 to 2 hours for a backup the way I do it with an encoder. I also have a program I can do a backup from DVD to the target in 15 to 25 minutes depending on file size and complexity.
