I have encountered a problem recently and not sure if it has anything to do with DVD Shrink or my blank media. I used DVD+R 4x and had no problem whenever I burn a movie or concert and recently staaarted using DVD+R 16x and sometimes DVD- Discs and the movie would become all distorted and quit and wondered if the blank media had anything to do with it?

Using quality media makes a difference. Some drives won't work with some of the off brand media. Drive firmware also comes into play. Firmware should be kept up to date for broadest coverage of media. Speed can also come into play. Most members recommend 8X. It's more a safety factor since good drives with good media can burn faster. As for myself, I burn video at 6X.

I recommend Verbatim and Sony +R media. Taiyo Yuden if you can find it is also good. Some Sony and Verbatim are made by TY. Taiyo Yuden under its own name is more easily found online. Most name brands with made in Japan on the label are okay.

Try using good media with the speed set to 4X or 8X and see how that works.

Alot of factors can affect a disk's playability, here are some:

Media quality
burn/write speed used
Your burner's firmware rev level
The player's compatibility with the media

-Always used the good stuff, I like Sony disks (made in japan) and Verbatims.

-Stick to a burn/write speed of 1/2 the rated speed of the media used, so for those 16X disks, use a burn speed of 8x.

-Make sure your burner is running the most current firmware, firmware updates add additional media compatibility and possible performance enchacements which could make a big difference in the finished product.

You can check here: http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_search.php

-Check your player's manual to make sure it's compatible with the DVD disks you want to use, stick to what's suggested by it's manufacturer. Booktyping is another option, your player is fooled in identifiying the disk as a DVD-ROM disk making it more compatible with the player. Booktyping can only be done to +R media and your burner must support the feature.

her's some info on it:

I have been looking & looking on the forum pages for help with Freezing movies. I am ripping movies just fine can view them on my PC fine. When I burn them they freeze and or break up. I bought a new dvd player, try more than one player, cleaned the players and my burner. Nothing is working. I have slowed my burning speed as someone suggested. HP says there is no updates on firmaware. I used the same media forever ( Fujifilm 16x) +r. Man I am out of things to try. My burn is barely 1 year old. Don't think I need to replace it, since i rip the movies just fine, burning seems to be the issue. I had problems with the following movie, The holiday, Casino royale, Blood Diamond, never mind the ones I haven't watch yet. DO you think that Sony is dong this? I found a link one day to scan a movie to remove freeze points. Unfortunately can't find it now. But it was on this forum - some where.

Does anyone have any idea what I can try next.

At a loss!

Sony has heavy encryption, but not freeze points that I'm aware of. I've done most of the favorites which means I've done the ones with the most difficult copy protections. Casino Royale was one of the more difficult releases lately. It's a big movie with heavy compression. So, what software are you using?

My recommendation is check out bbmayo's RI4M guide:
http://webpages.charter.net/bacitup/TheGuides/pacman777guide.pdf
Follow the directions and you'll get a good backup. I recommend using the software in the link because it has a revised version of Shrink that supports ImgBurn.

By the way, you can't go by brand names because many sell different media under the same label. Use DVD Identifier and let us know who made the Fuji. Taiyo Yuden used to make some, but I don't know who makes Fuji now.

Not sure what I'm seeing but I think it can't be identified. So with that being said got a feeling my media is the issue. I will try Blood diamond out tomorrow in my movie theater. If that doesn't work I'll go to Best Buy and get some other media like sony. Oh by the way I ripped each movie fine no problems. Its the burning that is jacked up. They all say successful, but NOT! Keep you post

Oh, and thank you for replying so quick. Appreciate it!

Open the DVD Identifier program, put a blank disc in the burner and click Identify. I put the manufacturer info we're interested in in a red box in the capture below. Mine is Sony D21 manufactured by Sony. That tells those familiar with it that they're looking at a 16X Sony +R manufactured by Sony in Taiwan. Good stuff. The made in Japan Sony +R is manufactured by Taiyo Yuden and that info would have been in the log instead of Sony manufacturing had I checked one of those.

Good luck. 4X media is getting difficult to find. In fact, I've not seen any in a long time.

If you meant you're sticking with a 4X burn speed and the media works good there, and you get a good backup, then you've found your solution.

@booperg

Have you updated your burner's firmware? Changing from 4X discs to 16X discs is a big jump. Your burner is probably not recognizing the newer 16X media and has no idea to treat them.

Check firmware here. If you flash follow instructions to the letter:

Since media has been some-what addressed, try using an alternate backup process and see if that makes a difference, shrink is outdated and may not be the best choice because of it.

Try ripping with DVDFab Decrypter, then use shrink to complete the process.

Try using ripit4me, it uses shrink\dvd decrypter\and FixVTS to create a backup.

All though u have used the same brand name of media, Fuji has a bunch of different manufactures, like Pacman said they were made by Taiyo Yuden a while ago, but in my experience those have been really hard to find lately in the stores. of course that depends where u live.
anyway are the Fuji's u have say made in Taiwan or in Japan.
Most likely i think u r using the Made in Taiwan and if there are, chances are they are not that good.

so just look who manufactured them with identifier, like pacman said

decryption and copy protection is to prevent the backup, it doesn't usually cause distortion and quiting. Anything appears to be possible, but that one seems less likely. Good point on Shrink needing an auxialiary decryption program, I try to get that out for the beginners as often as possible.

Distortion, skipping, and quitting can be caused by compression. With Shrink I often ask if the Quality Settings are in use. Still waiting for a media ID and as someone mentioned, the firmware needs to be addressed.

I bought new media Sony DVD +R 16x it appears to be made in taiwain. I've done some research and I think I have determined that my hp dvd writer 300c is a freakin Phillips. the one everyone keeps talking about how crappy it is. Long story short..the burner that came with my hp pavilion 754n wore out after 700+ movies and misc cd burns. After fighting with hp they agreed to replace the drive for a discount. I installed the new one and maybe 200+ movies and 1 year later this #$%^&* I think died again. I can burn CD's no problem, but DVD..its done. As far as firmware updates...per hp support I have current. However, from reading several threads HP doesn't tell you or really provide updates. I'm too scared to try to figure out how to update cuz I know if I mess up I screw up BIGTIME! Then I don't know if I need it or not. I do not see any step by step instructions to determine if the update is needed..I've looked. As far as DVD ID thing and Fujifilm dvd 16x made in taiwain: But I tried again to run it through, not sure why it is coming up with errors:

Funny thing is most of my movies were burned on Fujifilm or sony dvd's 4x,8x, & 16x However previous dvd were purchased in Dallas TX. Now I'm in Charlotte NC. I have 4 movies sitting on my HD that I want off. I would like to burn VCD if I could but I have not found a good guide for Nero or CloneDVD. I can't figure out how to split the files and only grab the movie vs menus etc. Anyone got one?

Sorry to be so long winded

Oh and I have tried burning in CloneDVD, Nero, shrink after processing successful, they freeze in my dvd player. I can watch them on my PC just fine. DVD Decrypter, ripit4me & dvdfab have been nothing but perfect. ITs the burn that is killing me! I will buy a new burn this weekend IF i have too, but I need to know for sure that I have to.

You're posting the log from Additional Information. Is there anything in the Disc Identification section like the capture I showed above? Put a blank in the drive and click Identify and tell us what you have in the area I showed in the red box in the capture. Your 16X sony DVD +R from Taiwan should read just like the capture I posted, if the drive will read the disc.

From what you say, it sounds like the drive headed south. The only way to really find out is to have it checked in the shop or have a known good one to swap in order to check.

You mentioned media by brand and different speed formats. Each could have been from a different manufacturer.

You said you tried a burn with Nero. A post of the log might help out. It's a notepad file named nerohistory located in the Nero program in the Core file, at least for Nero 7. There's guides for the individual Nero programs on the Nero site.

For burning to VCD, SVCD, DivX, MP3 and other formats, including DVD, the program DVDCopy5 from InterVideo does a good job. It's my favorite transcoder. You can open the HD files from RI4M and burn to CD or DVD in the format you select. If does the splitting or you can compress. http://www.intervideo.com

I forgot to mention, there's a full function trial. So you can burn what you need to for now with the trial.

Nope, didn't work. Once I made the dvi file then went to the other program, it didn't open the file. Then I had to get a patch and that didn't work. Tomorrow I'm heading to best buy I guess to buy a new drive. I wish they had Fry's here. Charlotte sucks when it comes to electronic stores. HHGreg, Best buy, I think circuit city. That's all I can find so far. UGH!

I should look for Lite on, Pioneer, Plextor, NEC or LG (not all good right?). I noticed that most of the internal drives are all dual layer. Do I have to use DL disc all the time? What is the advantage of using a DL anyways. Whats the big deal?

You don't need to use DL all the time. However DL is a nice feature. The discs cost more than a DVD5, so I use the DVD9 (DL) for my more favorite movies. As for buying electronics, the internet is a great place. I order items from Newegg, ZipZoomFly, and a few others. You can even use PriceGrabber to help find best prices. UPS delivers to my door, so I don't have to fight traffic and crowds, plus I don't have to deal with sales staff and cranky cashiers. You have to have your research done on what you want, but as long as you don't make mistakes the process is painless. Plus, you have a broader variety of products to choose from than you can find in stores in most cities.

Quote:

DVDCopy5 uses DVDs or DVD files or images from the HD. I was under the impression that DVD is what you were using. The source has to be DVD compliant. Other than that you choose the output and feed the burner.

I buy online often but I want the drive yesterday. I've been dealing with this issue for over a month now and I've had it! The DL is something I wanted to stay away from because the dvd's cost way more. But as long as I can use regular dvd's I could live with it. But seriously what is the real purpose of have DL. If the movie is long or something, less compression to fit the movie? I'm trying to see the advantage of it. Do I need to be concerned about buuying a drive that will fit in the dvd space. Do they come in difference sizes? Never had to buy one before. Or rather shop for one.

DL is a DVD9 which is the same size the DVD Videos are on. The difference is the factory DVDs are pressed and we record with a burner. Most new burners support both DVD5 and DVD9. DL means no compression when backing up a factory DVD. It's not as simple as rip and burn, but it's close. Being DL capable, you have the option, you don't have to use it. Without it, you don't have a choice. Though I don't use a lot of DL, I wouldn't buy a burner without it. Good luck with the purchase.

By the way, I never saw that Nero log. I edited the last post concerning your failed attempt with DVDCopy 5.

I did not post the Nero log cuz I had no problem burning, or at least it didn't say I did. THe only problem is the quality of what I burn. The freakin freezing while playing on my dvd player. I just came back for Wal-mart and I checked out their burners, they had a liteon 16x for $48.44 model # LH-16w1p364c. Any idea if this one is any good? I'm getting ready to go to Best Buy and see what they have. Well first I'm going to see if I can find any info on this lite on one.

Ok I bought Lite on DL 16x form Walmart. I cannot believe Best Buy, Circuit City and Office Depot had NO selections. I was forced to buy from Walmart. I went to Radio Shack and the only drive they had was Mad Dog which by the way the sales guy said was the former Plextor manufacturer. I said ok well where does it say that, his reply was well I have one and I know. Yeah ok, I believe this stranger. Maybe he didn't lie but I know sales can be a "B" I felt like he was just trying to get over. Needless to say I really hate Radio Shack products. Well lets just say I've had bad experiences with products purchased there.

Well I am in the process of burning now and I will let you know how it works out.
