I am curious to know if CloneDVD's old version, 2.9.0.3, is the best for dvd backups, or if the newest version is. I hear alot of mention of 2.9.0.3 being the best. Thanks.
CloneDVD2 is a good buy and produces pretty decent backups (as far as video quality is concerned), but to really get full use out of it, you should use it with AnyDVD running in the backround. The two together are doing a pretty good job at backing up the newer movie releases.
Many popular DVD movies are now created in such a way as to make it difficult for backup software to copy them properly (they contain bad sectors or bad DVD structure). This can result in errors during the copy process, or bad playback after the copy is completed. Clonedvd2 and AnyDVD together have been able to correct the sector and structure errors, where other apps produce "DVD-Video files reallocation failed errors (with the exception of some)". If you're willing to spend the $$$ for both, it'll be money well spent.
Lets make sure were talking about the same CloneDVD.
Clonedvd2 version 2.9.0.3 is a slysoft product that requires AnyDVD running in the backround to backup a copy protected DVD.
CloneDVD version 4 is a DVD X STUDIOS product that has a built in decrypter for copying CSS-encrypted, Sony ARccOS protected and Region-protected DVD movies.
The CloneDVD I was refering to was the slysoft product, when used with AnyDVD, it can properly backup any movie without a problem, it's what I suggest you try. To keep up with the latest copy protection techniques, all you have to do is update AnyDVD and you're good to go.
The DVD X STUDIOS product doesn't mention anything about removing Macrovision's ripguard protection, I'm not sure about the video quality of the backups, but I know that slysoft's clonedvd2 is very good. The built it decrypter is most likely quickly outdated, don't know how often the product is updated, but it looks like the entire package will require updating every time (that sucks).
For my money, slysoft's cloneDVD2 is the way to go.
What about 1 click dvd copy pro compared to 1 click dvd 5? Is there much difference between the both? I'm trying the trial of 1 click dvd
copy 5 is seems good. Its pretty fast.

No as far as versions, get the updates from Slysoft. They're done usually to address copyright protection issues. CloneDVD 2 is made to work best with AnyDVD. If you've got Nero already, Recode works as well or better than CloneDVD for transcoding quality. The free Shrink does as well, just not as fast.
Since this is a Shrink thread, let me add that you can get all the freeware needed for doing quality backups by clicking Here . Instructions are included for updating Shrink for ImgBurn and other things. Until the movie industry upgrades their copy protection, this system can't be beat and it's all the freeware we've come to respect. I just did Casino Royale with it, so I know it works from personal experience.
