dvd9 back of Gladiator fails on DVD-R DL

I was trying to backup my Gladiator DVD so I could watch it on my DVD player (i bought it in the u.s. and i'm stationed abroad)and it failed. From the error log it looks like the problem occured while it was jumping from layer 1 to layer 2.
Log is below, is this a known issue? Any work arounds. This is my first time burning to a DL dvd.

!st thing edit out the serial # at the top of the log - begins w/ 5C
Yep the burn failed burning to layer 2.
Ritek media is okay - better dual layer would be Verbatim.
From the log looks like the drive fully recognizes the discs you using.
So that's a plus. I couldn't find any newer for the burner - looks like this burner may have come with the laptop (?). Check the manufacturers site to see if there is a newer one then the one you have (HP16)
Firmware sometimes has fixes for the drive besides just updating the media codes.
You're using the original version of Nero 7 - they have been many fixes and enhancements since then.
Update to the latest 7.8.5.0.
You might also want to 'tweak' Shrink and autoburn w/ImgBurn - a better dual layer burner. Tweak for Shrink - link
Give those a go and let us know.

Thanks. I will try using Img Burn instead of Nero.
I have been looking around and i see alot of suggestions, mostly saying to use FabDVD or Rip4M instead. But I'm going to give another attempt before moving on, I hope this works DL are to expensive to be tossing out.
Might end up with a bunch of new coasters :)
I will post after I'm done trying again....in approx. 45 min.

Img Burn gave me a warning message stating the file had not been created correctly for DL burning. From what i understood the layer structure was not properly extracted by Shrink. It asked me if i wanted to continue anyways but i said no. I'm going to try the rip4m/img burn route instead.
no point in trashing another DL

I didn't understand part of what you were saying. Nero and ImgBurn are both burners and you're going to try ImgBurn instead of the Nero you already have. That part I understood. When it came to the suggested decryption software, you only mentioned the ones that had been suggested. What are you using now?
I noticed you have a couple of drives with DMA Off. That's okay for Sata drives, but if IDE they need to be DMA On.
For doing a DL backup, I recommend using RipIt4Me. Besides removing the copy protection it processes for DVD compliance. Open the DVD in the 1-Click mode and rip in a file mode (not ISO). Once the files are opened in DVD Shrink you close Shrink and open the files in ImgBurn. Under Mode elect Build, under Output select Device (your burner), then browse to and select the folder with your movie in it. I leave the selection for layer break on auto (in the settings, don't worry about it). When ImgBurn gives you an option for the layerbreak, choose the best one. That's worked for me and should get it done.

The first time i used shrink.
Now I used ripit4me, andit launched dvd decypter for me...I ripped it.
I'm getting the same message "Optimal L1 Data Zone Start LBA: None Found!(VTS_01) This ismage has not been mastered correctly for burning onto a double layer (OTP Track Path) disc.
None of the cells meet the DVD-Video specifications criteria for a potentail layyer break postion..... do you want to continue?"
I will look around sure someone else has run into this...

I should have given you the link for the guide before. You can use the first part to guide you through setup. Since you're doing DL, select Full DVD for rip mode. Don't pay any attention to editing needs since you're not doing a DVD5 backup. Then as I mentioned before, close Shrink and open the HD files in ImgBurn. Good luck and let us know how it turns out. Since you have you hard drive on nvidia controller - Nero doesn't report DMA correctly. So it may just be on.
The 2nd drive listed w/ DMA off is a virtual drive so no worries there.
Look in device manager for the controllers to check.
Another option since this one has nothing special on it is rip w/ decrypter only then burn the mds file w/ ImgBurn. This will have the correct layer break info.

Ripping with RipIt4Me is the same as ripping with DVD Decrypter only with the extras of compliance processing with FixVTS and compliance testing with DVD Shrink (the quick analysis). Also, if there is any decryption DVD Decrypter can't handle, RI4M creates a PSL file for handling the protection with Decrypter. It's really like having an updated DVD Decrypter with the ability to process for DVD compliance.
The RipIt4Me output is compliant, but it doesn't have the layer break set for DL. I suggest opening the files in ImgBurn which does a good job of automatically setting the layer break. The files from RI4M should be in file mode (not ISO). Select Build under Mode and under Output select Device (your burner). Browse to the folder and select, click the big icon to start the build and burn process.

I agree with that totally but in this case since esco007 is getting a layer break error with file mode why not try ripping in iso mode w/ Decrypter and burn the mds file w/ ImgBurn.

I don't think a DL error will appear with ImgBurn as it did with Nero. The reason I suggest ripping in file mode is more for newer copy protection. The files need to be available to the software for compliance processing. I realize there are successful methods for doing earlier releases that vary from my suggestions. Gladiator is so old Shrink would probably rip it. Ripping with Decrypter and burning with ImgBurn will probably be successful with Gladiator. However, I try to tell members how to do a backup so it will work with even the latest copy protection.
Try doing a DL burn of Casino Royale, Saw 3, Talladega Nights or any of the newer ARccOS protected DVDs with a DVD Decrypter rip, even in ISO. As I mentioned, I describe methods that cover both pre-ARccOS and ARccOS protected DVDs. One method is less confusing than having several. For the experienced it's no problem, but it's a different story for those not as familiar with the software.

Agree again :)
My assumption (& we all know what happens when we assume :) ) was esco007 was using RipIt4Me and ImgBurn method when they got the layer break error the 2nd time.
But maybe doing using ImgBurn separately in build mode will do the trick.
It's done well on my end in either mode for dual layer.
Hopefully esco007 will post back with good news.

I'm sure you're familiar with FixVTS. I've yet to hear of it making a set of files noncompliant. So, I see no difference between ripping with RI4M and DVD Decrypter, except for their success with the copy protection. With the compliant files in ImgBurn, the program sets up the layer break. I forgot to add for esco777 to click the calculator icon under Information when going to do the burn. Select the best layer break (note the stars). Once that's done and a DL recordable is in the drive, the icon lights up for the burn. ImgBurn creates the setup for the burn, so I don't see how it could read an error for the layer break when it creates it.

I didn't mention it before, but with the errors the way they were reading in the log, once you try the ImgBurn, if it doesn't work, try a Verbatim DL. If your burner is having trouble with the media, that might cause an error with the layer break.
There wasn't anything that would effect the decryption of Gladiator. It's an older release with light copy protection. Either Decrypter or RipIt4Me should work. RipIt4Me is necessary for newer releases as Binkie and I were discussing. By ripping in the file mode and letting ImgBurn calculate and set the best layer break, I don't see how you could get an error unless it's something to do with the media.

Hey guys thanks for the help, i followed your advice and it worked! I installed dvddecypter, img burn and r4m (already had shrink). I used r4m to extract the files (not the ISO) and then after it ripped the files i double clicked on the MD5 file that was created, img burn launched and started burning...perfect 1 to 1 copy.
You guys rock!
