wmyr - Please have a look at this.
On the fly burning is not a good idea and will more than likely be impossible anyway since most DVDs require compression to fit on a single layer disc.

When backing up, choose the ROM drive as your source and the external RW drive as the destination, set the burn speed to 4x or 1/2 the rated speed of the blank media to help prevent burn failures.

As DakotaFan says you don't really want to be burning DL disc on the fly. But Single layer disc can be done that way. It's not recommended but I've done it on occasion. Do as Johnl suggests with SL media.

I've only tried it with single layer media. I use Recode with AnyDVD.. My typical times are about 10 to 15 minutes from the time I put the original in to the time the copy pops out of the burner. This is using an 8X burn on Taiyo Yuden media. This a very fast way to burn a disc with a high end computer! I like to experiment so I may do some of the things I recommend not doing. This is just one of those "do at your own risk" deals. If it works, fine, if not, well.... we warned you.
Here is my Recode log from "The Prestige", movie only, which took about 12 minutes:

You can do a straight copy thru recode in the same time, 8X burn. Just there is only ripping and burning. I've done quite a few old SL movies copying the whole disc in 15 or less mins. Not on the fly. Yeah and I've done some copy on the fly too with just about all the proggys I've got.

I always burn from the source DVD directly to blank media, I've yet to have a failure. It can be done successfully every time if the media is the good stuff and you watch your burn/write speed.
