it all depends on how much bandwidth you actualy, how much you are using, and how much upoad is being used while "downloading" - areyou using something like emule or other file sharing software? If so, you're uploading as well which will affect your xbox while playing on live

I've narrowed it down a bit. If I download from a website the lag is fine. If I download using a bit torrent client I get the lag. I know, I know - dont use the bit torrent - but is there a setting that anybody knows of that will prevent this?

Thanks. By trying different upload speeds I can stop the lag :)

I would try an amplifier. You might get a better cable signal.

Did you even read the all of the posts? I have the same type of internet, and I never lag... on any game! It isn't the lag, it is the network crashing!

Try the amplifier, it will help, the question is how much!

Justin, CHILL man! Not everyone is as educated and as smart as your must be for knowing so much about it all, I mean, EVERYONE should just know that off the top of their head, I mean, who wasn't born with full knowledge of how downloading and uploading works?

As far as the actual topic is concerned, there's nothing you can do to optimize your bandwidth for downloading something from bittorrent and playing xbox live with no lag. When you're using bittorrent, as your found out, you're uploading as well. Here in the US, you can have an 8mb cable internet connection (+/- 800kbps) yet your download is only 75 kbps (3/4 mb connection). When you are using bittorrent or emule, you are using nearly 100% of your upload unless, as you also figured out, you limit your upload speed. This frees up extra bandwidth so your xbox can send out the information about what you're doing in the game to the servers. While you are downloading only, there's plenty of bandwidth to download the xbox live info to the xbox, but its how much you're uploading that will kill it, no matter what type of optimization you do when you are using your full upload bandwidth. So, sorry to say, but in nicer terms than the previous poster, an amplifier will not help you be able to use full upload speed in something like bittorrent and play xbox live with no lag. An amplifier will even possibly wreck your internet connection if it messes with the signal to the cable modem too much, or it will simply amplify the signal to the modem so it gets a better connection, but your upload speed l so slow compared to your download speed that it simply will not make a difference. I would not recommed an amplifier based on my extensive experience with signal problems with cable modems ...

Right my modem has been fixed and I have overcome some of the issues. The one remaining issue is a lag in the game when I am downloading from another PC. "

this is the direct quote so if in the given sector there are alot of peeps on this same bandwith alocation then he would infact lag in certain demands.

WE don't like the F word in our forums!

The amplifier may help a great deal because the lag my be because he has a low dB reading.

Yes, if his db reading is low, it could help, I didn't see that part - but if could also amplify the bad signal to the point where the cable modem doesn't see the signal - two sides to it from my experience, but yeah, you're right.

sites he had no problem that would only be if he was having problems everywhere not just torrents and such he sad when he was coming from webok let me break it down for you the bandwith is like a hallway if you have lots of people going forward (upstream also uploading) and then alot of people start going the other way (downstream or downloading)u get lots of congestion or lag and there you go no amp just lower he upstream and you will be gtg good to go

Domreis btw i see u took out ur f word to if u would have used i wouldnt if u would have just read the part where he said any other kind of d/l without upstream u would have seen what i was saying and see that the amp isnt gonna do much for him while hes uploading

right, but if he's getting a weak signal to the modem, it could help - if you have any sort of experience in the tech field, you have to acknowldege that the amplifier could potentially help - if his situation is due to low db signal to the modem causing a poor connection. If it is due to alot of people signing on and slowing the whole network (cable internet is crap), then it will not help, and it could also make the problem worse - but you have to acknowledge that it could potentially help. Any tech who is able to reason out problems and their outcomes has to acknowledge that there is a 1 out of 3 chance that it could help. Stop being so negative man...

I was just questioning you because there, still may be things that can help fix his problem.

If you edit your post you may get off easy with the mod... ;)

Domreis sorry for curing you out it wasnt a bad ides for an amp if there where any other problems without upstream. like i said pm me if u have anyhting else to say so we dont hijack thread

well, yeah, I know its not truly because of low db - uploading ALWAYS kills the xbox live - we both know how slow the upload stream is compared to the d/l stream ...

Guys, thank you all very much for your help and ideas. This was the only community that had ANY idea about what my problems might be and which gave me some good insightful information to make my network environment better.

As it turned out, the problem was caused by a faulty modem. Replacing the modem, restoring factory defaults in the router and placing the Xbox Live in the DMZ has resolved my original issue. The one remaining issue is the lag, but given the information I have read here, there is nothing I can do about that but regulate my upload speeds or dont use bit torrent at all while the Xbox is on - either way the lag issue is "in my hands".

I apologise if I have caused any arguments!

Thanks again.
