I recently backed up two games, Narutimate Hero 3 and Kingdom Hearts Final Mix with Maxell DVD+Rs (my computer can't read DVD-Rs.) using Nero Burning ROM on 2.4x. (The lowest setting)Kingdom Hearts plays ok, skipping at times, but still playable. Narutimate Hero works like a charm except in some fighting sequences. (special moves)

I don't know if It's my media, or me using the wrong program. (DVD Decryptor?) If it's my media, I'm willing to buy a higher quality one, so I need to know what's the best out there.

Is it ok to use Maxells until I can get my hands on Verbatims? Also, does it matter what program you use to burn?

The program does matter, but DVD decryptor is a good program to burn ps2 games with. I personally wouldn't use Sonys, because they outsource their work and you never know who actually made the disks. Stick with verbatims or try using Taiyo Yudens. Its somewhat ok to use maxwells until you get better media. The worse the media the harder it is for your laser to read the media. The lasers do wear out and it will wear out faster if you use bad media, although Maxwells aren't horrible. Another thing you can try to do with your Maxwells is setting the booktype to DVD-ROM, this might help your PS2 read them.

btw some of sonys code out to be Taiyo Yudens and the rest code out to be sony which are both very good media . i have backed up over 400 ps2 games and a lot of movies with sony with out any problems.

Yeah, I changed the booktype to DVD-ROM, but I only know how to do that with Nero. I did notice a huge difference between booktyped and non-booktyped, so I'll figure out how to do it with DVD Decryptor. Guess I'll just have to deal with semi-working games for now; unless even the high-quality discs don't work...If THEY don't work, I don't know what I would do. :/

Geez, my Maxells are nearly always freezing. Maybe It's because they're 16x. Anyway, will buying Verbatims fix this up?

My comp. can't read Maxell's DVD-R cd's. But it can read the +R.

I use mostly Fujifilm, JVC and TDK. And my games older than 2 years are still working fine :)

1. try updating your burners firmware
2. Try burning them at 6X or 8X with a 16X disc. With 16X i would go no lower than a 4X speed.
3. Personally i would not trust Maxcell or Sony, both outsource and have at leat 6 different media codes that their discs can be. But Verbatim 8X DVD-R or Taiyo Yuden 8X DVD-R are my top picks. Then my next would be Philips 8X DVD-R which are very compatible with PC's, DVD players and consoles.
you can use lists like
http://www.videohelp.com/dvdmedia
http://forum.cdfreaks.com/forumdisplay.php?f=76
http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm
everyone's burner and PS2 are a little different so just because someone says the DVD is great doesn't mean that you have a 100% chance of it working for you.

Thanks everyone. I'll try burning the Maxells I have right now at a faster speed, until I get some better media. One question though, if I make an MDS file out of the ISO will it work better? As of now, I can't figure out how to booktype with DVD Decryptor. It keeps giving me an "unknown (FAILED!)" error. I know I'm picking the write drive. Anyone help?

Here's a picture so you know what I'm talking about:

I only use two Sony DVD+R and Verbatim DVD+R.I find those brands really work well with my Burner. It all depends on your burner.Burners reacts Diff. to all media.

One more question, if my disc is 16x do I still set the disc to half speed? (8x) Or do I go for 4x/2x/2.4x?
