well custom firmware is safe as long as you dont mess around with the flash in recovery mode without knowing what you are doing but it is safer then official firmwares because if it bricks you can use recovery mode to get it back!
you can run your "backup" games straight from the xmb and it is like a combination of 1.5 and 3.03!
the only real danger is when you are upgrading to it but the risk is still almost non existent as long as you read the instructions carefully.
if you use 3.03 oe-c you can even install custom xmb icons and themes.
personally i think it is the best thing you could have on your psp!
just format your memory card and reset default settings then use the 3.03 oe-c winstalle on this page. then just run the update from the memory card in the xmb

you are using 1.50 right?
if not downgrade first
have fun!

CFW is safe for sure, just as long as you dont do like the rest of these numbskulls, and run devHOOK from an OE (bye bye PSP)...
CFW is definately where its at...no fw emulation, no ISO emulator req'd...perfect; almost...

dnt forget customization, and the ablity to revive your psp from semi bricks.!!! <---- that was DAX's sole purpose for creating a CF. his first ever CF was called "proof of concept" and it had the recovery mode. but now CF has turned into a user customizable FW were the user can make thier psp look, feel, and act as they wish. therfore £180 (how much i bought it for) well worth the money!
