Hey addict,
get a capture card or a device such as this Hauppauge.
I am in the process of converting bunches of VHS tapes to dvd. Time consuming but it works.

If you have digital movie camera, check the manual. Some of them you can use as analogue to digital converter. Hook up your VCR to camera and from there by firewire to computer, that is how I do it.
Otherwise capture card or get VHS/DVD combo recorder, it may be the same price as capture card.

I've used Pinnacle break out box for years it lets me record all my very old vhs tapes of my kids to a program to make a DVD movie with all kinds of editing I started with Version 8.0 I now use 10.7 the break out box is a Dazzle 150 you can use a pci card to record to your PC and use Adobe Premiere also . Adobe cost a lot more money . I use both but Pinnacle seems to be a bit easier and cheaper

You may not have to buy anything and there is free software you can use to capture a VHS recording very effectively. First do you have any type of videocard installed? And if you do have a card installed does it have connectors like either of the ones circled in the picture below?

Post back with answers and I'll see how I can help.

There are certain DVD players that can transfer a VHS tape to a DVD right from within the unit. Now I am not saying to run out and buy one of these, because for that type of money you could get a tv-card/vhs capture card. But if you know someone who has a device like that see if they will let you use it.

I use VirtualDub for all my video-capturing jobs.

virtualdub.cfm

It is very efficient and doesn't use a lot of system resources while recording the video stream. It hasn't failed me once.
