what exactly are you expecting to see? media files have icons that identify what program will be playing them, not the content of the file. media folders will display an album cover or some such thing, however. is that what had changed?
for that file you should use a default program then that program will icon it, there so many programs that run these files if you remove the default program it will ask what to do to run the file or the icon will be gone

I went to control panel/ add remove programs then choose defaults, i saved Microsoft media player as default player but when i go back to make sure it was saved correctly the setting is back to " use my current media play"
Ok try right click the file go to open with, and then to choose program if the icon won't change then uninstall and reinstall the program that works with the file, then you can make sure it is the default program, or try to make a new file and see it works with a new one I've had the same thing happen to me when I had installed and un-installed programs that ran the same kind of file . See what happens with a fresh file first

I did remove and reinstall Microsoft Media Player already didnt help
That's what has worked for me. What version WMP do you have 11 ? if not try the upgrade to media player 11 and did you try a new file not the same one ?
