I would like to take my xbox online and play how do i do this? I have a router but do i have to hook the modem up to the cpu and do i have to have xbox live

Cable Modem connects to router connects to back of xbox.
That's how i did it.

There's 3 different ways to connect.

1) Direct connection as DeadRain explained.

2)Using a wireless adapter connected to your xbox and having it wirelessly connect to your router.

3)Network bridge: Hook your xbox up to your pc and bridge the connection so that they both connect to the router.

You don't need Xbox Live, but usually it does provide a better experience. There's also Xlink kai and XBconnect which are free.
