3.40 oe-a recovery mode problems?

I have upgraded to 3.40 oe-a and it works fine. I wanted to go into recovery mode to change the cpu speed but before i could get that far i just got a black screen. I've tried many times but i just can't get into recovery mode...then on one try, i left it on the black screen for a while and it finally went to the recovery menu, but then when i went to scroll down it just went black again??

There are no real problems with my psp as it starts up fine and plays games fine. I've been in recovery mode before ('R' from boot) so i don't think i'm doing anything wrong?

I'm not really that bothered about changing the cpu speed, i'd just like everything to work as it should, i'm also worried that if i brick my psp i won't be able to recover it...
