it depends what drive you get, if you get a benq drive then NOPE, but if you get a hitachi then yes

It's a pretty slim chance that you'll still be able to find one with a Hitachi 78fk drive. They're using mainly 79fk and Benq's. And 78fk's the only easily flashable drive right now. If you can find one with a lot number of 0709 or 0710 then you may be in luck.

Yes, the lot number would be located on the outside of the packaging.

c4eva released Maximus - FIRMWARE TOOLBOX V3.1B-Repack
http://www.xbins.org/nfo.php?file=xboxnfo1585.nfo
Will this work with a v79?
Maximus released an update to yesterday's 360 Firmware Toolbox(info) v3.1:
[QUOTE]
Maximus - FIRMWARE TOOLBOX V3.1B (With C4E/Garyopa Hitachi 1.7)
The Credit on the Hitachi 1.7 is to C4E for his original Hitachi Jitter Fix and to Garyopa for layout those changes on other versions

What's new/fixed (since v3.1):
* Added: Missing File was causing troubles to users with Classic Mode.

On this release I am including a missing file that was causing problems to users that used the option of the external flashers mainly users with drives 59 and older, none 78 users complain

We are on the same line to having 1 tool for all hitachi versions and to allow that we already have figured out how to solve the USB-SATA issues and some SIL issues to, so on next versions you can use that devices (for versions prior to 59) whithout glitches.

Meanwhile since this version is not USB-SATA friendly you can use the "external flashers" option or use the C4E release earlier wich is MS-DOS (if your drive is 59 or lower) and this release if you have 78/79

For the 79fk drives, it will MOD the firmware but it CAN NOT read or write to the chip on the fly.

This means you would need to physically remove the firmware chip from the board and then use a programmer to flash the chip. Then you'll need to reinstall the chip.

You got a Hitachi 79fk. Those still can't be flashed. The drive can not be put into mode b. Team Xecuter is working on a chip which will enable mode b. But it's not ready yet.

And to clearify... once ready, the chip will only enable mode b. Installing the chip will not let the drive play backups. The drive will still have to be flashed to play backups.

You have to solder on the 79 pass key chip in order to flash them 9 wires to solder.

Feature List:
- Start Drive in ModeB automatically (Bonus Feature)
- Enable Software Reading and Flashing (Main Feature)
- 2 Options for Mounting: Wires or Flat Cable
- ONLY 9 Wires to Solder (Choosing FFC cable: only 1 additional wire)
- Support all models of Hitachi 79 drives
- Onboard Activity Blue Led
- Onboard disable jumper
- Can be leaved in place (recommended) for future firmware Upgrades
- Device Code Developed 100% by Maximus

Source for the 79 pass key http://www.maximusgames.net/79passkeyinfo.php .I hope this helps some users out, because I had the same problem when I got my Xbox 360.

nope and why would you want one. I don't see the bonus except for a quiter, cooler xbox. Just leave your xbox alone at normal speed. Its how games where made to be played..

My elite has the v79 it seems.I havent opened it up and now due to 360drives.com,i have a v79 drive. It would be great if someone came out with a method to bypass the chip that protects the 360s drive with out soldering anything. If I had v78fk drive I wouldve gotten it flashed by now. Here are my specs.(It means the earlier versions of xbox 360 elites had v0078fk drives)
Xbox 360 elite (203 w 90nm)
Team CSON Manufacture date-2007 07 02
DRIVE (EXAMINED EXTERNALLY)-Hitachi
Firmware-dont know but it is a version of those v79 drives when i went on 360drives.com

If you were going to purchase an elite make sure the specs arent like mine
Team CSON MFG date:2007/07/02
Xbox 360 Elite (203w DOESNT MATTER)
these drives have v79 drives and im stuck with one.Be careful if you flash it too because you will have to have some knowledge of soldering and removing this formula I heard called "epoxy".What ever you do Good Luck

I wouldn't recommend a solder iron to get up the epoxy, but a heat gun works pretty good as you can control the temperature better.
