Ok, first of all, I don't do this.
Me and a friend were talking about renting movies, and then he said that someone copies them, and yada yada yada.. Then he said the rental store can tell if you copy them, and I told him they can't, because how could they? This is just really bugging me, and I want to prove him wrong : ).
Thank you!

I have heard many times that blockbuster has chips in their dvd's that let them know if you copy them. I'm not sure if it is true, but that's what I've heard. Other stores, on the other hand, can't tell. However, someone is working on making a tracking chip to place in all newer movies that can tell if it has been copied in order to protect the copyrights, but it is still up in the air nad has not been employed yet. Hope this helps.

Cant be! when you insert the disc the laser reads it and since you cant burn a dvd once its burned (unless its an RW and that wont be used for Hollywood Movies.)Then there is no way for that supposed chip to write down that information on the disc.2 totally diffrent procedures burning and reading.

"The technology, which can also be used for Blu-ray and HD-DVD discs, will allow movie studios to remotely track individual discs as they travel from factories to retail shelves to consumers' homes.
Home DVD players will eventually be able to check on the chip embedded in a disc, and refuse to play discs which are copied or played in the 'wrong' geographical region, the companies behind the technology expect."
Here's the website on it:
http://www.vnunet.com/vnunet/news/216430...p-fights-piracy
I highly doubt that it will pass though. It would create a big mess, and people would probably have to buy new dvd players in order for the dvd to even play with the chip installed.

Anje18 what you are talking about will only work if you have the right disk in the right player, it wont work in a normal dvd player, so i would not worry about it for a long time

If the rental store says that you "coppied" the disk ask them...
"So, whatcha gonna do about it?"
Either A: You did nothing wrong, in which case the rental store can pack sand... or...
B: You already have your coppy and could care less what the rental company thinks about it.
Honestly, I'm really getting fed up with these DRM/Encrypted/screwed up Movies...

you know what the movie industry keeps changing everything they discoutinued vhs tapes(witch i think is ok because VHS tapes were crappy anyway)but besides that look at how many people bought those for years my mom had 5 big giant totes of vhs movies probley about 1,000 or more dollers in those movies, for what, you cant really transfer then inless u wanna go though a bunch of crap,so we write it off as a loss but look at how many people are steemed at that ok,so next dvd comes out poeple start buying dvd playes witch now are cheep but at first wasent, people spend a lot of money on all these dvds,or you can copy them but only some people copy them a lot still but dvds i know people who have but probley about 1,000 $ or more in just dvds after VHS,think of all the money wasted, now i have read that by 2011 dvds will be replaced by,what ever its called, its going to get where people are just going to quit buying the stuff, its all wasting money for what its all retarded.

If a video store finds out that your copying movies, they could report you. I guess it all depends on how often you've done it. I think you get like 5 years in federal prison and a 250,000 fine if you get charged with it. Just for your information.

I don't believe any of this for a moment. Video rental places aren't effected one way or another if you copy a movie and I'm sure they couldn't care less. It doesn't make any sense that they would.

i run a video store. we don't ask if people are copying the rentals, the only way that we can tell if someone is or has copyed a rental is, when they return a blank dvd in the case the orignal rental disk was sent out in, and we want to keep our people comming back to keep renting our movies. so when this happens we just give them a call and they bring back the movie, the only time we get the police involed, is when the people don't bring back the movies, three days late, per the agreament.

I have to disagree with this gerry...the video store, if they don't care now, will start caring when instead of someone strolling in and renting their video for $3 starts coming to "the nasty pirate" and buying their own copy for $3. I know what you are saying, but eventually it will hit them in the pocketbook and then everyone will start caring.
It would take alot of pirating to see the monetary loss though.

i would have to agree also LOCOENG. and i don't think its a good idea to discuss backing up rented movies or thinking its ok in here for the whole cyber world to see
We shall go to the end,we shall fight in France,we shall fight on the seas and oceans,we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air,we shall defend our Island, whatever the cost may be,we shall fight on the beaches,we shall fight on the landing grounds,we shall fight in the fields and in the streets,we shall fight in the hills;we shall never surrender

i have never heard of so much nonsense ,think about it honestly, do you think with the amount of dvd movies that they rent out , that they have time to sit down and check each individual dvd disc to see if tom dick or harry copied it ? i had a good laugh when i read this post lolol
