Hi, I hope I have posted in the Correct forum.
I am new to Recording so please excuse my ignorance.
I am trying to burn a file to my DVR-111d Pionner using DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter. I always get the following error.
Can anyone help or tell me WTF it means.

That error can be caused by a few things. So let's start with updating the firmware of the drive. The latest is 1.29.
Media can be another one - which media are your using? Like Sony +R 16x.

Hi,
I have been trying to update the firmware to 1.29. But the firmware will not update from 1.23 to 1.29.
I recieve the Error " Failed to return to normal mode" when it re flashing.
I have also requested help from pioneer on flashing the firmware, No luck from them.

Memorex has a bad rep due to poor manufacturing. Would you mind downloading DVD Identifier from CDFreaks and let us know the manufacturer ID of your media? It's a small program and all it does is ID media. I always like knowing what I'm using and just brand names don't always tell.

Have you ever been able to successfully burn with this drive?
Did you install it yourself?
You can try uninstalling the drive from device manager.
Right click on 'my computer'. Pick properties>hardware tab>device manager.
Under DVD/CD-Rom drives right click on the Pioneer and pick uninstall.
Reboot and let Windows do it's thing and reinstall.

I did install the drive myself, I have not had a completed burn as of yet. Removed the drive and reinstalled, still no change.
The media info is

Ok shot in the dark here but when you installed the did you set the jumper pin on the back to 'master'? Thinking since the Pioneer is the D it's on the master secondary ide port. Most drives come set to slave.
Or you can change the drive to the slave connection on the secondary ide cable (jumper set to slave) to see if this config works.
Then try the firmware update again. The Memorex are made by Ricoh - usually decent media but not all the burns speeds (16) show supported.
Which speed are you burning this at? I would use 8x if your not.

Ok, I moved the jumper to slave, No luck. tried everything with the jumper in master position.
Cant flash or burn.
I have tried all of the write speeds but generally I just use the max speed setting.

A quick lesson in jumper settings using the older IDE cables. There's 3 ways to go. You have computer select (CS or CSEL), where you set all the drive jumpers the same and the computer sorts it out by cable position. Optical drives have to be on the 80 conductor cables. With the master-slave configuration the master is at the end connector of the cable and the middle connector is the slave. You never put a drive on the middle connector and leave the end one open, in other words no slave drives without a master drive. The jumpers and cable position have to match.

I'd stay away from max speed right now.
Since you've never been able to burn anything with this drive I'm now leaning more towards the ide cable or the drive itself.
You ide cable what color are the connectors? Blue, black and grey or just all grey?
The error you get when flashing the drive is not a normal one either.
Try downloading the firmware again.
What did Pioneer say on this issue?
Do you have another pc you can try this drive in?

I have finally got the firmware to update. I removed the cd rom from the IDE cable and then tried to update the DVD firmware.
Not sure why that worked ???

Not really sure on why that did either but hey it worked.
You might want to try burning a dvd now with the cd-rom disconnected.

For the Pioneer it's part of the instructions to isolate the drive being flashed (I've seen similar instructions for other drives). Below info is posted on Pioneer's website.

? To perform DVD writing at 12x or 16x speeds, use Pioneerdesignate
disc media. For details, consult information available
on Pioneer?s website.

I also noticed that Pioneer has a recommended media list, it's in PDF, it's linked from the site I provided above. The Ricoh RO3 is a supported media as well as one of my favorites, the Sony D21 (16X +R).

That's what kinda of puzzled me on the firmware unless sgw1 is running windows 98SE.
Running XP and having a Pioneer drive set to slave I've had no problems updating the firmware - but then again I guess Gates may have improved upon his os's :)

I think the suggestion was for Windows over all and noting 98SE had particular problems. Maybe I misinterpreted. But I've seen the suggestion before and obviously it worked when the drive was isolated. I figured necessary instructions would be included with the firmware download. Isolating a drive is a recommendation, not a have to, but when things don't work, it's a good idea to follow the recommendations.

Thank you all for your support.
I seached Pionner site for hours and never came up with anything in their Knowledge base, the only thing that was listed was the firmware update program and no instructions about isolating the drive. Guess i should not have gone to the support link

I am now able to burn and burn and burn.
Very Odd that I can only burn if the CD burner is disconnected from the Ide cable. I have even replaced the IDE to see if it was just the cable. Very odd.
But like you said as long as I can burn it works.

Glad to hear you can now burn.
My guess on having to have the cd-rom disconnected might be a power supply problem.
I think there are some free utilities to check it - not sure though. Majorgeeks.com would be one place to check.

@sgw....strange about that ide problem....would your pioneer only work ifit was the only device on the cable???I had EXACTLY the same problem with a 111 and a 112....they would only run if they were the only device on the cable.Which is a real shit bearing in mind most mobos now only have one ide channel for two devices.I tried all the cable changes, master/slave settings etc.It too was also a bugger to flash .I thought it was my ide controller on a gigabyte ds4 board, so i changed the board to an asus p4b and voila! sorted.

Yup, The only way the dvd will burn is if it is the only device on the cable, Yet it will read when both the CD & DVD are on the cable.
I will check up on the board change to see if I can do the same.

I think I'd try another drive at the slave position before I got into changing a board. I always like being sure before spending my money and labor.
