great, thanks... I will try that as well. although I don't see why it wouldn't work in the first place. :S

I have exams tomorrow though so it will have to wait until the 16th of may before i try anything. :(

You've got me excited now. I'll do the same, hopefully later today. I didn't know hot to burn the setup disk at first but do now. Just need to find my blank media - I've got a stack of them somewhere...

from what you said the only thing that should change whether or not the disks are read is the reading speed.

also what original game did you guys try booting the first time? mine was excite truck.

did we all get the chips from games4play? maybe its the cables they provided. don't work well for speeds up to 6x? or maybe its our soldering that crippled the bandwidth...

I don't know if that is the problem until I try it myself anyway but its good to find out what our common parameters were since we seem to have the same problem. maybe it'll stop other users from making the same mistakes.

Yep, I got mine from games4play.com and I wouldn't recommend them to anyone. I tried Wii Sports, Call or Duty 3 and Tiger Woods in that order. Havent got Excite Truck (Yet ;-)

Will let you know later when I've tried it. Just found my Media :-)

Good luck with your exams Istorm... If this works it will be something good to look forward too.

I have used Nero to burn setupd DVD disc, I have choosen lowset possible recording speed and finalize disc option.

I'm not sure if setting DVD rom speed from 6 to 3 was really the solution, I can try to put it back to 6 to see if its still working. I think that running setup disc and saving the configuration to weiikey was the trick more than changing the speed itself.
I have set the settings as follows:
Region override ON
Audiofix ON
Discspeed 3 (dvd rom is much more silent now - which is positive and I didn't notice any delay in game loading time)

I've got my wiikey from dealer in Netherlands.

I hope your wiikeys will be OK as well :-)

Bad news!!! After 3 installations of my Wiikey I have now ran out of kynar wire. I went to see what I could get at Maplin and the thinest wire I could get was bell wire. This is huge in comparison. I now have 3 of my solder points missing and need to solder to the legs of the board chip. Anyone reading this - never use bell wire, it's too thick.

I'm also not sure if the Wiikey I got from games4play.com is genuine. They are back on the Wiikey sire as approved re-sellers but do not use these guys. It is impossible to contact them and there seems to be quite a few people with the same problem as me above who have bought from these guys.

I also have had no reply from www.wiikey.cn

I'm at the stage of thinking of paying an expert to do this. I am near Manchester UK, does anyone know of anyone I can get to do this?

haha inapond... u just made it in time... i just came back from maplin with my bell wire!

i was going to use one of the fibres in the bell wire anyway... not the whole thing. a fibre compares to the size of the kynar so i guess in would be ok

hhhh12 the setup disk needs a gamecube controler to operate....

the v1.2 setup disc can be controlled using the reset button.

short click changes menu. longer click selects the option.

try that and let me know!

Istorm, you will probably be alright with the single strands. The bell wire I bought was solid. It is a very fine soldering exercise - good luck!!!

I've whimped out and paid someone to install a Wiifree yesterday. He had to solder to 2 of the IC legs as the bell wire had destroyed the pads. He used very fine ceramic coated copper wire (just looks like the winds off an electric motor) which I did see in Maplin but didn't buy.

Good news is now my Wii plays everything I have thrown at it so far with no problems at all. I am a happy Wii bunny :-)

I'm having a similar problem...

I got my WiiKey from www.foundmy.com (should be original)
I used Kynar wire to do the install
I used Double sided foam tape under the chip
I covered the wire connections with scotch tape
I can boot originals, but cannot boot backups or the setup disk
I am using Fuji DVD+R disks

I just burned a setup 1.2 disk on Memorex DVD-R, and I'm going to try that next.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

I can boot (and play) originals, but cannot boot backups or the setup disk
I have used Fuji DVD+R and Memorex DVD-R disks, neither worked
I have used the latest version of imgBurn with default settings and at both 1x & 4x.

EDIT: Now add Sony DVD+R to the list of disks that don't work

Does anyone have any suggestions? Do I have a bad chip? Does the fact that I can play originals with the chip installed mean anything?
I've modded my Xbox, PS2, and GameCube, and to me, my soldering looked fine. I'm not a novice, but I'm definitely not an expert.

from what i've read up i think it would either be a bad installation or bad disks :S

I can't really help as I see that you have been reading up... you know as much as I do :)

check your connections with a multimeter and let us know.

I checked them before putting everything back together, but I could have messed something up. Another user suggested I use another burner... I've been using either of two Samsung SH-S18x series burners... one IDE and one SATA. I think I have a TDK or LG somewhere around here to use. I'll try that.

Any known issues with using RW DVD's? All these DVD coasters are making me upset... those could all be games or movies!

UPDATE:

OK... Everything works fine for me now. I had a bad wire. When I stripped the Kynar, it broke the wire but not the insulation. That's what happens when you're dealing with such a small gauge wire... and the insulation is thicker/stronger than the conductor.

Anyway... when I tested continuity with the multimeter, the wire must have been touching. I remember getting a spotty signal, but I just figured it was my hand shaking. When I put everything back together, the wire must have bent and separated inside the insulation jacket.

New wire... works great!

Good luck to all of you in the thread that are still having issues... I hope you get it running soon!

Hi Martiko,

I have deduced that the Wiikey is the problem and I must have a faulty one. I am waiting to here back from games4play.com but I have since read that they are very bad at getting back to customers. I wish I had bought from another company who I can actually speak to. I have also sent my details to Wiikey this morning including details of this thread and I'm waiting for a reply. I am hoping that somehow I will be able to get an exchange and try again.

I will post the reply from Wiikey if I get one. If you find out anything else, please let me know. Cheers!!!

I have now had a few clones sent to me to install, some worked, but the latest lot have not, and the latest being from a customer who purchased his from games4play , the PCB was much darker blue, and the ID text is visible on the atmel chip. After trying every region config disk without any joy, i popped one of my genuine wiikeys in and it worked flawlessly, with the original wiring in situ.

The chip is a definate clone, and going from what the customer said did indeed come from games4play.

And no, it isnt my soldering, believe me.

;)

oh, and when i say ive tried the settings disks, they would not boot at all, whatso ever, but would (the correct region one) on a genuine wiikey system.

just bad chips.

I installed mine again yesterday... installation again went flawlessly... poped in the config disc and everything works fine now.

i guess if its not genuine I will find out when I apply the update from wiikey.cn (if it ever comes out)!
