weeee mines fixed!.. thanks for that picture LukeO.
For me, i had stuffed up the solder job to begin with, and in removing the solder with a solder sucker, i took 2 of the pads off with it. So at that point, i stopped and took it to an installer, but he hadn't done wii's before, just alot of xbox's, 360's, ps2's and gamecubes. I also didn't have a diagram with me and because i'd burnt the pad off, we both thought that the bottom pad in the middle below the resistor, was meant to link back to the resistor.
When i saw LukeO's picture, i realized it goes back to the chips 2nd leg from the top!.. called my installer, went back, fixed, and away she goes. Good as gold! :)

Nope, did see that on the Wiikey site that all new chips ship with holograms, this could have been old stock from games4play.

I'd be amazed at the brass on someone to take the p*ss of their position as the only UK disti for the Wiikey and start flogging clones!

Disenter - Glad the picture helped :-)
(Don't suppose your fella is in the South East is he?)

Just FYI - Tried ANOTHER make of media, this time TDK 16x certified, setup disc burned at 1x, still no joy.

Will check for shorts etc. later before deducing it's a naff chip.

I've heard Wiikey replace duff ones, is this true?

Cheers all,
Luke

Hi Krazyace,

Did you quick solder or wire solder the one you got from games4play?

Have handed it back to the chap who fitted it who was going to try a wire solder and see if that makes a difference.

Have a look at some responses I've gotten on this topic on another board...

http://www.digital-forums.com/showthread.php?t=303151

Concencus on there is the chip I/we got from games4play looks genuine, and that a surface mount, in the opinion of those who have fitted numerous ones, is not likely to work - Wire is the way to go!

Since starting this thread quite a while ago now I've been playing on my Wii with more games than I can play due to finally taking my Wii to an expert who wired in a Wiifree which has worked flawlessly. I finally got this response from games4play.co.uk on 14th May:

Hi Mathew.

Having looked at the picture of your install (excellent) I can only assume the chip is faulty.

If you return it to:
JDC-RMA011
Pooh Corner
Dibden Hill
Chalfont St Giles
BUCKINGHAMSHIRE
HP8 4RD

I will send a replacement straight away and include the setup disc FOC.

All the best, Joe

I posted off on 17th May. Not heard anything yet. So if you are reading this Joe Warner, either send me my Wiikey or preferably a full refund as my Wii now works great. Thank you.

Good luck everyone else, I would reccomed a wired install. Make sure you use the right gauge wire, especially if you are wiring to the ic legs.

Hmm...

2 choices.

1 - I send a picture of the install to games4play and hope he get's back in touch offering a replacement (And confirmation it's not a clone)

2 - I put this down to experience that games4play is in fact unworthy of being on the official wiikey site

3 - I get my mate to try a wire install on the chip?

Krazy - Did you wire install in the end?

Avoid games4play like the plague mate - They sell clones, as I found out the hard way.

Ordered one from http://www.modchipfitters.com, UK based, listed on www.wiikey.cn as an official disti, and it's a proper chip, hologram and all...

UPDATE: New Wiikey recieved from modchipfitters.com, installed via wire method, now plays my backups!

What have I learned?....

1. Check wiikey.cn again and again before thinking of ordering from ANYONE, as they seem to be struck off once reports of clones come through

2. Wire is the way, surface mount/quick solder just doesn't want to play.

Thanks to all for input & advice...

the modchip from games4play (short wire installation) plays just fine on mine.

now I am not 100% sure that it is not a fake and I am a bit scared of updating the modchip when the new firmware comes out.

other than that everything works fine.

This one played a backup before putting in the setup disc... Have since tried the setup disc as well to see what options there are.

is yours an NTSC console? because I think that if it is PAL you have to insert the PAL setup disc first to set the region on the chip.

You'll need DVD-R's mate, did burn some +R's, and have since tried them but they don't read.

The Wii is supposed to be fussy, so I bought some 16x Verbatim ones (Good quality), but I burned the setup disk to a Tesco one, and works fine.

Setup disk you need from www.wiikey.cn
