if u cant boot the config disk and u have a V2 wii make sure u check for it. if they are chopped off there is nothing you can do pretty much except buy and older wii....pretty gay...pretty fuckin gay

just shave off the chip above the legs and solder there.

Hi, all,
I've been following this thread trying to solve my own wiikey problem.
I wire installed my wiikey. I've printed out the diagram of 'alternative solder points' and verified every connection between the drive controller pin and the wiikey pin it should connect to. I've verified power and ground as well.
With the wiikey out I can boot everything fine
With the wiikey installed I can boot the wiikey setup disk and run setup
With the wiikey installed I cannot boot originals anymore - I get the disk read error messsage
This is really frustrating and I'm wondering if I have a bum chip (it comes from gamersection.ca but they're listed as reputable on wiikey.cn)
A coupla questions... the firmware for the wiikey.... is all I have to do is boot the setupdisk, I turn on region free, turn on audio fix, set disk speed to 6x or 3x and then hit save settings? It says 'saving....' then returns to the original screen. What do I do after that? reset console? or just turn off the wii? Should it say anything *after* saving settings to acknowledge that they're saved?
Thanks for any insight....

I have very same problem and here is a pic of that below.

I did what was suggested and by shaving the chip. I was really scared to do this but took the chance. Worked like a charm. I would not recommend this to people that dont know how to solder well. Here is a pic of the finished version. Sorry but I had put hot glue on it already to make sure the wires stay so there is not much to look at.

So far my clone Wiikey is working. I really should get the real thing though.

lol - never mind my previous post - my wiikey works fine.
My son gave me a ps2 disk to test it with at first... doh! After unsoldering and resoldering a time or two to verify I realized that little fiasco. I then grabbed what I thought was an original Legend of Zelda for wii off the desk. Who woulda thunk that one disk over was a 'legend of zorro' dvd instead... double doh!

I have the same V2 Wii as you. Did the same thing, shaved off the chip and solder wire into chip but still doesn't work. Only the original runs
Other people with the same Wii got it to work, dont know why we couldn't. I'm gonna go and try to resolder the joints later today. But also I'm thinking it could be the media

Update:
I bought my parents a new wii so that i could take the one they had purchased on launch day last year.
the version 1 wii worked perfectly with the wire solder method that i used, it took me 5 minutes to open the case, 10 minutes to set up the wires and solder them to the chip and the drive, and then another 6 minutes to put the case back together after taping the chip.
so if anyone is going to the store to buy a wii so they can mod it:
IT WON'T WORK. you need a wii that was made prior to march 07. the new wiis (V2) have a different wire path so that the wiikey connections will NOT work.

You need to look at the top of the chipset. If it says D2B then you should have no problem modding it with any Modchip. (If the 3 pins are missing you will need to do a modification to the chipset as showen above)
If you have the D2C chipset then your out of luck. As of now their is no Modchip compatible with it.

I just installed my wii key. Everything looks good so far. I can boot originals but not backups. I tried the config disk and nothing. I checked my wires and fixed one of them. Tried the config disk again and got lucky. When I tried to run it a restarted my Wii and now it won't read the disk again. Is this the media hopefully, I've only tried Memorex+R 16X. Has anyone else had this problem if so did you fix it. THanks.

if it's not the media then probably one of the connections came off... check the cables again...
check the media first though :)

It still could be media. I have came across some members and including me that had issues using Verbatim and Tayio Yuden. I would try a different brand still. I use Maxell DVD-R media and have had no issues after going to those.

Mine is D2B
I'm resorting to think it might be the media, although it could very well be the solder joints since they are so small and hard to tell.
I'm starting to loose hope in this thing. Maybe those xecuter guys might be able to help me with their new chip

An online guide for the missing 3 legs problem.
PLEASE NOTE: for all you peeps having major problems, read this.
THERE IS NOW NEW VERSION OF THE WII DVD ROM DRIVE OUT, THESE NEW DRIVES HAVE BEEN MODIFIED BY THE MANUFACTURERS AND HAVE 3 LEGS FROM THE MAIN DRIVE BOARD IC CONTROLLER CHIP REMOVED, WHICH MEANS THAT THE INSTALLATION FOR ALL BRANDS OF MODCHIP ON THIS WII CONSOLE MODEL IS NOW MUCH MORE DIFFICULT AS YOU NOW HAVE TO REMOVE THE TOP COATING OF THE CONTROLLER CHIP TO EXPOSE WHAT REMAINS OF THE LEGS SO THAT YOU CAN RECONNECT THE 3 LEGS OF THE CONTROLLER TO ALLOW THE MODCHIP TO FUNCTION. SO FAR WE HAVE ONLY COME ACROSS THIS ON CONSOLES STARTING WITH THE SERIAL NUMBER LEH123XXXXXX AND ABOVE, DUE TO THE INCREASED DIFFICULTY INVOLVED IN MODDING THESE CONSOLES WE RECOMMEND THAT YOU SHOULD ONLY ATTEMPT TO FIT A CHIP YOURSELF IF YOU ARE EXPERIENCED WITH A SOLDERING IRON AND YOU HAVE THE CORRECT TOOLS TO DO THE JOB. IF YOU ARE UNSURE WE RECOMMEND YOU GET A PROFESSIONAL TO DO THE INSTALLATION FOR YOU, Modchipfitters DO OFFER THIS SERVICE IF YOU REQUIRE IT.
AN INSTALLATION GUIDE ON HOW TO GO ABOUT INSTALLING THE MODCHIPS FOR THIS NEW MODEL CAN BE FOUND HERE
HELP
If it don't work, try try again ....lol

okok let me get this thing straight
i am getting the wii next wii (out of stock)
does the newer wii in the us or canada have the missing legs and D2C or both us and canada have the same problem?
here is what i have understood so far
you can either have a D2B or a D2C
D2B can either be with or without the 3 legs
and in either case the wikey can be instal on (more challenging when missing the legs)
D2C you are just SOL...
right?
and one way to tell if i have a D2C or a D2B
is that with serials LEH123XXXXXX AND ABOVE i will have a D2C
am i correct so far...

@gahau
You are correct on most everything but using the serial# to determine what chipset you have is not 100% accurate.
There have been D2B chipsets that have had a higher serial number then other Wii systems that had a D2C chipset.
So you really won't know what chipset you have until you open the Wii up and read what is on the chipset.

is the D2C phenomenon a Canadian thing or i will also experience the same thing with a us wii
i know it might sound stupid but how do i go about getting the right wii with the right chip i guess nothing is at 100% until i open but how do i maximize my chances?

There really is no way to maximize your chances.
If you get a D2C chipset you will need to wait till a Modchip is released that supports that chipset.

I had my friend install my chip, because he solders a lot better than I do. What do you need to check for on your multimeter to make sure it is working right? Also I have a first version Wii has anyone been able to use +R media on it, because I have had no luck, am going to try -R hopefully it works.
