I have a Pioneer A104 DVD-R Burner. I recently updated the firmware from 1.30 to 1.40 to burn at 2X speed. I am using khypermedia 1x-2x media and leda 1x-4x media. Both will write at 1x speed with no problem but if i want to burn at 2x speed i get "power calibration failure". I am using nero 6 ultra edition as software. I have a pentium 4 1.3 GHz pc with 384 mb ram. I feel this powerful enough to burn at 2x speed but i could be wrong. I cant figure it out. any help is greatly appreciated. thank you in advance for responses.

Try flashing the firmware back to 1.31 The 104 should burn at 2x with correct media anyway so why did you upgrade the firmware? Firmware 1.31 is the best for the 104.

I upgraded to 1.40 because the site where i bought my dvd-r's suggested that i upgrade before burning at speeds higher than 1x. My mistake for going against my judgement. where can i find the 1.31 firmware at? i tried the same site as before but they dont have it. Also, i read that flashing back can damage my drive permanently. I dont want to damage the drive. Does anyone have any idea's?

OK this site will let you downgrade from 1.40 to another of your choice. As I say I would recomment the 1.31v which I used to have on my old 104 and it worked flawlessly; http://www.firmwares.co.uk/
For more info on firwares check out this official site:http://www.dvd-recordable.net/

Ok downloaded 140down130 and unzipped using winzip and powerdesk neither of which worked. double clicked upgdvd and error arises. I have read that it could be my hard drives. I think i have fat 32's but i should convert them to NTFS because it is more powerful. What do you think?

No Fat32 should be fine. Go back to v1.40 and then grade down to v1.31 instead. Try that first.
