ok so i decided i want to flash my dvd firmware to play backups and
i know the xtreme firmware 5.3 was just released for compatability
with the spring dashboard update(wich i have installed).
i have a toshiba-samsung drive. the directions in the readme are
very very vague and i'm not sure it would work. some tutorials say
to boot a program called mtk flash(or something like that)from a floppy disk but i don't even have a floppy drive.

For ms28 firmware versions of drive you will need to use the Vcc method or the VIA SATA 10 sec method to read/write flash.
Advisable to make a backup of your dvd drive firmware first.("mtkflash r /m orig.bin")
In Windows, copy orig.bin to same directory as this release (same directory as ReadMe.txt and X360SAM.exe)
Double click "Make Xtreme firmware.cmd" and follow the prompts. Thanks to eXOBeX for X360SAM.EXE
Copy x53x.bin to boot disk where x is a,b,c or d.
Power off PC
Plug SATA cable from DVD drive to PC. Power cable drive still connected to Xbox 360
Power on Xbox 360

Run "mtkflash w /m x53x.bin.bin" where x is a,b,c or d.

it'll work but it's not really safe.. a member from here who had followed your tutorial had some problems, since the way you mention it can be quite risky.
i suggest using 360hax.com this site its safe, quick and up-to-date , also gets updated each week and everytime something new hits the net.

I know this is off topic but why do you always direct people away to that site? the tutorial that ps2 posted is so easy someone with no experience should be able to do it & it works fine.

Get yourself textbooks latest tutorial and if you dont have a floopy or a usb stick, it will tell you how you can use your hard drive and an ntfs dos cd.

All this samhack/xhack/xread whatever is NOT as reliable as the old-school mtkflash.
It's outdated ONLY because it's for xtreme 5.2 and xtreme bootmaker 3 something. That's the only part that IS outdated.
