dvd unreadable disk ???

every time i put a disk in my 360 i get an unreadable disk error. It started about 5 months ago , but would normally clear up it I turned it on and off about 10 times. now it will not do anything. You can hear the disk not spinning up at boot up. I heard alot of xboxs have this issue and its a fualty disk drive. I was wondering if a firmware update would fix the issue?

I have one with the hitachi gdr-3120l rom ver 0047dj

is there a way to flash the firmware without haveing to buy a mod chip?
I was thinking I could smack it in my computer but the power pin out is different then any other sata I have seen. it only uses 12 pins and normal sata is 15 pins.

I could just hook sata cable from pc to dvd drive and run power from xbox while it is turned on but this seems alittle risky to me and I am not sure it will work.

Can someone please help me?
