I have had a problem burning to DL discs (not verb and not with imgburn). I went back to the SL discs and use VobBlanker if the compression will be less than 80-85% to split the movie in half and put the first half on one SL disc and the second half on another SL disc. It's much cheaper to do it this way and it will not take all night to complete a backup.

yeah, i see where youre coming from. but i'd like to have my backups be exactly like the original copy, all on one disc. rather than having to get up during the middle of the movie to switch from Disc 1 to disc 2.

I use DVD Rebuilder for high compression backups. It does an excellent job. To date I've not run across a release it won't do a good job encoding to DVD5. I watch the movies on a 60" screen, so the video quality has to be good or I would easily see any errors. Shrink using quality settings does a decent job on most movies, but it doesn't compare to RB. RB does take longer, so a good system is needed unless a person wants to spend hours doing a backup.

i see you are still using the 8x(rated) DL verbs, did you read the links i gave. i think Joe Ryan pretty much told you the reason why you are having trouble, he also said some solutions to the problem, which are try and find the lower rated(4x) verbs, or get a new burner that supports the 8x DL Verbs.

also is your pioneer burner in a laptop?
Do you have a Desktop PC?

New burners are very cheap.[/quote]
updating previous events, i bought some verb 2.4X DL's yesterday and tried it again. where's what i got:

yup, DMA is enabled, and SL discs run like a champ.

ive had this computer for a little over a year. i work at best buy, and ive already had to send it out to service for the mousepad going bad, and my manager said i could probably just get it replaced in store if i need to get it serviced again. but i just dont want windows vista.

to be honest, i dont mind if it burns at .5X b/c i only do my DL burning before i go to bed. i just want it to shut down the computer...which it wasnt doing before with the other 8X verb DL's.

thanks for all the help guys!

Yeah I'm thinking it's the drive too ZCS626.
Those laptop burners just don't hold up as good as their pc counterparts imho.

See if you can buy XP somewhere -maybe BB has a copy laying around? Then just reformat the new laptop with XP.
I have no need like you to try Vista - everything is running smoothly w/ XP and I'd hate to screw that up :)

lol - that's what I did - bought an external for when I use the laptop to burn dvd's. Still burns (single layer won't attempt a dual layer on it!) but is picky with media and sometimes even has a hard time recognizing the media it burned or even originals.
But I had the crappy Matshita.

I picked up the LiteOn SHM-165P6S from newegg.
Here's a link for the LiteOn externals from there - link

Me personally I'd go with the Pioneer. Haven't used their externals but have an internal that does a great job.

If you don't get a discount at Best Buy to bring the Pioneer lower than the LiteOn's from newegg I'd go with one of them. They have fast shipping.

Oh and to make the url be a hyper link between these ] [ type in the text.

Keep us posted on the outcome when you pick up the external.
Hopefully you'll be back to burning dual layer in much less time :)

Looks like the latest firmware for this drive is 1.21
Burned much faster then the previous drive so a step in the right direction :) Failed the verification though - try and play it in a player anyhow.

Does it play in a player or the pc?
I'll have to see what else I can think of or find - hmmmm.

well i watched the whole movie through, with no problems except one:

when i pressed play movie, at the menu screen, it went, but lagged for about 20 seconds before it booted up the movie to start running. other than that, it worked like a champ, no delay, all audio, everything.

i just cant figure out why at 11% during the verify step it says "failed to verify sectors." thats all im stumped on.

would it be bad if i un-checked "verify" when i burn?

I rarely have verify checked and all okay on my end but I do more single layer then dual layer. I mainly test by playback.
The 11% might be menu if the menu screen doesn't come up at the beginning - like if you have a bunch of previews before that comes up.

The only thing I can come up w/ is still the bit about new dual layer media that 300bowler linked too. My other thought is maybe it's not as perfected as the 4x & under is - still has some glitches here or there(?).

maybe, but that link bowler posted suggested to try using the Verb 2.4X DLs.

i have both, verb 8X and 2.4X DL's, and on that inparticular burn log i just posted was with the suggested 2.4X DL's.

who knows! but it works so whatever! thanks again

Verify means that the copy has to be exact. I never use use verify myself. If the output plays properly, I don't worry about it. I've done a few hundred copies. However, if you have a problem, you need to correct it.
