To date (as far as I am aware) no-one seems to really know what's causing the bans. There are many theories floating around.
As I've said a few times already, I have a sammy drive with 4.2 firmware. Flashed long before I went anywhere near live (over 12 months). I've been on live for around a month now. I'm not banned yet and I don't intend to change my firmware. As someone else quoted "If it ain't broke."

Well I Got me another 360 (Not core)
I was going to buy a core sometime this week or next week; But I decided to go by this game shop that a friend owns and that i knew him from high school; he was selling this premium 360 for 220 but i ended up getting it for $180 w/out the HDD and Controllers that i didnt need a hdd anyway.
Now; I can confirm the drive is a sammy; not been modded or anything and im debating if i should just go ahead and flash it with IXtreme or just hold it off till i hear if its any good for the next few months.
also he states he only used it for like 4 or a few months and has no problems with it.
So Hell I got a good deal than paying over for a new console.

still on, still forzaring. Waited till official uk release date to blend in. Also not bothering to change my firmware. Not broke, don't fix it seems to be the generall feeling here.

If you have never been on live at all then maybe it would be safer to move over to ixtreme? I'd already been on live when the bans started to hit so for me I saw little point in changing the firmware.
Having said that if you don't intend to go on live then no need to bother changing the firmware really. Depends what your plans are for the future.
Anyone else have comments then please jump in, keep this thread alive.

I'm still running 5.3c on an ms28 and logged on to Live yesterday with no problem. I downloaded a few trailers. I haven't really played on Live alot lately as I've only been into CoD3, but I'm just burnt out with it.

i love being burnt out! hahaha. ya my sammy is iextreme 1.2, and also my hitachi 78 with 3.1b is still going also. i honestly don;t think anyone has been banned since the first initial banning took place. can anyone confirm??

I read about someone banned last week. I don't think he was a pre-logged ban that hadn't found out yet either. I think people who weren't truly stealth and had some attention drawn their way like from playing pre-releases or Crackdown the game MS made sure to check hard got banned. Once the bannings starting people starting being careful. That's why you don't really see anymore bannings. There's still people flying under the radar, but it looks like a case of MS not scanning everyone without probable cause.

k since i have only been on live before the spring update and bans! im thinking it safe for me to do ixtreme then spring update! or is it possible this will get me banned?

You may as well go for it. If you've been banned, you're banned now. You are just avoiding finding out by staying offline. I recently flashed a 360 with ixtreme 1.0 when 1st was released that hadn't been on Live since the end of March and it was fine.

i doubt im banned cuz i wasn't online for a whole week before spring update! the bans went on after the spring update so im guessing there was some software in there to detect the modded consoles.

Well actually the logging started well before that, the best theories from GaryOPA and C4eva seem to state that the logging probably started with the fall update.
Also for anybody interested, the xbox performs a PFI check even without the ethernet cable attached - the concern here is whether that check is then stored until the next time you connect to live.
M$ still have no way of reading the firmware but they have been able to spot the backup discs from a mile off!!
I personally don't believe they are banning anyone at the moment now, I think we are all safe until the end of august/middle of september with the next round of bannings falling sometime around the Halo3 release

I myself have been keeping up to date with these threads on being banned, seeing what, who, how, why, if and when I could get banned and how to avoid it etc etc...
I have however come to a conclusion. At the end of the day it is WHEN and not if I will be banned and have come to accept that. For the time being I'm happy to enjoy negligible cost online gaming. Make hey while the sun shines and all that. Its inevitable and to be honest only fair when my time does come, after ultimatley what is taking away a large chunk of revenue owed to the developers
With the cost of games now running into sometimes millions to produce, there MAY come a time where people like myself become the partial cause of poorer quality games due to lack of funds to develop it, which is a cause for SOME concern.
Dont want to sound miserish or miserable, just purely food for thought.. :)

my friend flashed his 360, i believe after the spring update, and since then has not been banned. he says he plays nothing but originals on live and his backups only for normal gaming. The bastard has not been banned yet, he downloaded the spring update, obviously, and nothing yet, i really hate that bastard! ;)

Plus it makes posts like this pretty much pointless.

It will have no effect on anything since you do not know why you were or were not banned.

yep, that would be me.
people from about every different catagory you can come up with have been banned, then there are some with the exact same set up as the person who was banned who somehow seemed to slip through the cracks. There is really nothing but educated guesses at this point, and that includes the people making your firmware. They can only take their best stab at making one that MIGHT help you from not getting banned.

I logged onto live the day the spring update was released, I updated my system, and never went on live since that day, I went on the day before yesterday, & found I've been banned. LOL
Have a few questions, I have another 360 that is flashed with the Xtreme 5.2 fw, it has a ms28 drive. After my first 360 got banned, I plugged my HD into this 360, and was going to go on live on it, but then I thought, i'd rather leave one for backups, and play on live with this one. But from all the speculations, I have found that people think after the spring update, some checks in the new firmware started logging data, my 2nd 360 has the spring update, which was installed when I plugged my HD into it, but it has not been on live, if I flash it back to the original firmware, and go on live, will it be banned? 1st, you will never know till you reflash it back and try it but if you are shure it has never been on live before the update it should be ok.
2nd, the hdd makes NO DIFF, it will work just fine. i change my hdd's around all the time and i heve one modded for backups and one for live.

Thanks for the reply, no, the 360 has NEVER been on live, but like I said, when I plugged the HD from the banned console into the non-banned console, I updated the dashboard firmware, does this mean that the console would have logged everything into its memory ready to be sent to MS, it was not updated through live, but through the HD.
