I recently burned a backup of .hack//outbreak MULTI5, and, while it does play, it plays in black & white. Now, I'm not new to backups for the pc, but I did just start using ps2 backups. Is this issue with the file itself, or is it a bad burn? I used a memorex DVD (yes bad idea as I've now read after I purchased them) it was 16x but my laptop's top burn speed is 8x.

Memorex DVDs aren't the best, but that's not the problem. Burning at 8x is a little fast (usually 1-4x is best), but again that's not the problem. The problem is that you've got a NTSC TV and you're trying to play a PAL/MULTI5 game. Either patch the iso with a PAL->NTSC patcher program, or download a NTSC copy of the game.
