The reason a PAL region firmware will brick a NTSC(U) Wii or partially brick a NTSC(U) Wii is due to region locks on the hardware. So a PAL firmware can not work on NTSC hardware.

When a higher firmware like a 2.3(U) firmware comes out on a disc. It should update your Wii back to the correct region firmware. Which should correct the Wii settings brick because your running the correct region firmware on the Wii again.

My theory of why this is possible is that the 2.2E firmware only has a system update on it. Bricking your Wii settings because the PAL version was installed. The DVD drive firmware never was updated leaving the NTSC(U) firmware still on the drive. Which is why you can still play Game Disc on your Wii.

If this is correct then you should be able to recover from the partial brick when an updated firmware version comes out on a game disc. It should re-flash the Wii settings part back to an NTSC(U) version when the game disc ask you to update to the newest firmware.

Never said 100% you can.

I said it might be possible to unbrick a semi-brick Wii.

If you have bricked your Wii and can not do anything with it. Like play games then you have totally bricked your Wii. (PAL users had this issue with Paper Mario) As of yet there has been no fix for this issue.

The Mario Strikers update only seems to effect the system settings.

So since the Wii can still run games it could be possible to update back to the NTSC(U) firmware when an NTSC(U) update comes out on a Game Disc.

But the firmware has to be higher then 2.2U to even have a chance to update.

Lets put it this way. Lets say Nintendo releases a new firmware 2.3U and adds that to a Game Disc.

If a PAL Game Disc that has an update on it can flash a 2.1U (or lower) firmware to a 2.2E firmware then it should be possible to change the 2.2E firmware back to the updated 2.3U firmware by using the Game Disc. (This is only possible because the Wii can still play game disc)

(There is no 2.3U firmware out so don't ask. It was just an example)

hehe

I know I set myself up for that.

But I know if I hadn't added that line there would be some asking why they haven't received that update yet. LOL

I have the same problem. I downloaded Mario Strikers(supposedly NTSC) and when the update began I let it continue(keeping in mind that this was an NTSC disc) Low and behold, the next day I went to change my wiimote sensitivity and I had lost access, immediately realizing my mistake. I'm glad theirs a shimmer of hope. Thanks for all the info.

@pob91403 or anyone else that has their Wii settings brick.

Could you post back when an update does come out and you update it Via the Game Disc to the newest firmware. I would like to know if this actually did fix the problem.

I plan on it. I'll post at all the forums I found this or similar topics on. Hopefully I wont be losing my Wii to mod science. Similarly if anyone finds any information that would make me feel better, like if this whole thing wont destroy my Wii, be sure to let me know. Thanks.

I have a PAL copy of Mario Striker.

My WII is a US one, and has the 2.2U firmware.

Can I run the game safely ?

Do a little searching and you will find your answer.

Heck if you read all the post in this thread you will know your answer.

Why don't people read all post or search for the answer when it is clearly in this thread or could be found by searching.

Has anyone experienced this problem:

I have a NTSC-U Wii with 2.2U software with Wiikey which works great.

I tried to run Mario Strikers Vortex NTSC edition.

After simply inserting the disk and it loads in the Disc channel I decided to take it out because it prompted an update. I did not update the Wii.

I then insert a backed up game and it does not load, disc read error.

I have to go into settings and reformat the Wii and then insert the backed up game and it now loads.

My theory is that the Mario Strikers game does something to the Wii memory which affects the abillity to play backups.

Why give you or the group credit? Thank Nintendo for putting the 2.2U firmware on the Big Brain Academy disc.

I said in the previous post above that this should work once an update comes out higher then what was on the Mario Strikers Game Disc.

Guess I was correct. Glad others will get their Wii Settings back to normal.

Read all the post in this thread.

This thread is about Mario Strikers bricking the Wii settings. So if the Wii Settings are bricked then there is no way to get to the update option on the Wii.

That is why they had to wait for a newer game to be released with a higher update then what was on the Mario Strikers disc. Big Brain Academy has this update on the disc that will un-brick the Wii Settings.

But after the Wii Settings gets un-bricked make sure you keep your Wii updated with the newest firmware Via Internet and this problem shouldn't happen again.

this is great news that you can unbrick the wii.

this means that nintendo still hasn't figured a way around to modproofing the wii and it won't be until they make some big time, hardware changes that'll cost them to change their manufacturing which will cost $$$.

and for some reason i highly doubt they can modproof it through system update otherwise they wouldn't do that pathetic attempt of cutting 3 legs from the systems and just go straight for the firmware updates like sony psp.

I thought the Mario Strikers was a 2.2E firmware update. I guess it was a 2.1E firmware update because Big Brain Academy has the 2.2U firmware update on it.

In any case my theory was correct about un-bricking the Wii settings once a higher firmware came out on a NTSC disc.

But it would be nice if someone came out with a fix for a fully bricked Wii.

Well, I do give this guy credits for risking it out.
Can anyone CONFIRM that thi unbricks a Wii? Not meaning to doubt the poster, but I really do not want to risk this.

It's been confirmed on allot of other sites as well. Just bite the bullet and do it. If it wasn't for risk you wouldn't find yourself in the position you are in now.

Your always taking a risk playing a PAL game disc on your NTSC(U)Wii. If you used the NTSC Vortex version that was patched from the PAL version then the risk was downloading a game disc and assuming it was what it was labeled but ended up still having the PAL update on the disc.

@novocaine

Keep in mind there are 3 types of regions for the Wii. NTSC(U)/NTSC(J)/PAL Each can brick or semi-brick the other region Wii systems if the firmware is installed on them.

Big Brain Academy NTSC(U) version will not unbrick your Wii Settings. It could do more damage to your NTSC(J) Wii if you update with the NTSC(U) firmware on Big Brain Academy. So do not use the NTSC(U) version to try to unbrick your settings.

You will need to try to use the NTSC(J) Big Brain Academy version.

If the Big Brain Academy Japan version has the 2.2J update on it then yes it should unbrick your NTSC(J) Wii Settings.

How long has the NTSC(J) Big Brain Academy version been out? It might have the 2.1J version on it. If this is the case then it will not un-brick your Wii Settings. You will need to find a NTSC(J) Game disc that has a 2.2J firmware update on the game disc.

Once you get the Wii Settings back always make sure you keep your Wii updated with the most current firmware. Doing this will protect your Wii from being bricked again by having the wrong region firmware installed on your Wii..

Thanks Larry. I'm unsure if there is even an NTSC-J version of Big Brain Academy. Oh well, i guess i'll have to wait for a NTSC-J game with an update.

Hey, I have a totally different situation to every other poster here. I am from UK and someone got me a WII from HK, "Not knowing it was JP". Well, It worked fine until I put Big Brain Academy (U) in, and it had an update. It strangely only gave me one option to select, and in japanese i thought it had a disc error. After I updated half way, I turned off my wii and back on, it still worked (including the backup games) but my settings menu leads me to an Opera Error. I had plans of using Super Paper Mario (J) which apparently has the 2.2J update or I would even wait for a 2.3J update. But im sort of stuck, and dont know what I should do to fix my settings menu. Im just concerned because at some point, I might need to change a setting. Luckily my Wii Connect 24 is still on, So I could hope for an update on the message board. I also have 2 duplicated Channels on my wii which is the weather forecast and the connect 24, I hope they go after an overwrite on the firmware. Any Advice? Thanks. ^^

Note: my wii is a JP version, not US and I cant read a single word from it LOL. And i did Update it to 2.2J before I did the update, or played any new games. Which was why i did not unplug the A/C as it was updating (I thought it would end up even worse), so I cannot blame myself entirely, but the fact i cant read japanese T.T.

@novocaine

Try using Pokemon Battle Revolution or Super Paper Mario NTSC(J) versions to do the update. I don't know if they have the 2.2J firmware on them but you can always try.

The worst that will happen if the firmware is lower then 2.1 is it will skip over the update all together. If your lucky and 1 of them does have a 2.2J firmware on the game disc then your Wii Settings should get un-bricked.

@kevinyim

Since Big Brain Academy NTSC(U) has a 2.2U firmware update on the disc you will need to wait till a NTSC(J) Game disc comes out with a firmware higher then 2.2J to correct the Wii Settings. So right now it will be a waiting game for you.
