FIRST TIME BURNING DVD HELP!

My husband and I have done everything possible to man kind trying to burn our first dvd on the computer. We are using decrypter and shrink. No matter which program we try to use when its on the final step (burning) it always says drive not ready please insert blank disc or no disc inserted. Well there is a disc in there, and we have tried DVD-R and DVD-RW and cd-r and cd-rw's. So does ANYONE have a clue as to why it keeps saying this? Do we need to format the discs or something? Please respond ASAP. We have been trying now for 4 days to get this to work. HELP! Thanks in advance to any response.
