locked to Vodafone UK

I have rang up vodafone and bought a code from them and that doesnt even work. please help! also must I enter the code with the vodafone SIM inside, or a WRONG SIM inside, or no SIM inside at all? help would be appreciated thanks

After the phone boots up, press #
Press * 3 times fast for (p)
Press * 4 times fast for (w)
Press * 2 times fast for (+)
Verify code before pressing the last #.
