I used the game Pangya Golf PAL on a US system. I really didn't pay attention to the firmware update because I didn't think this game would have one. Once I noticed it is updating my firmware, I got scared and didn't want to turn it off or eject the cd. In the end, I ended up with the Opera message :(
if i was you i would get a game like, paper mario, or brain age this should un brick it.

@feod

Read all the post.

As I said in the Big Brain Academy thread which you gave this same information in. Big Brain Academy will not work for all brick issues.

This issue is a DVD Drive brick issue. Which Big Brain Academy will not fix.

The InFeCtuS Mod Chip (WII NAND FLASHER) http://www.infectus.biz/#wiinand should be able to fix the Firmware on the console later on. cheaper than buying a new main board.

I have already tryed a month ago changing dvd drives.
My friends wii is full bricked and when he starts wii he gets the opera error messege we both have wiikey installed so i opened them and replace his dvd with mine, but nothing still i got the same error so i gues its a motherboard firmware problem... in order to confirm that i powered on his wii with no dvd at all and wii starts and shows the same error.
BUT with his dvd my wii starts normaly and plays all games i have, pal and ntsc imports.
So if there will ever be a fix it will concern a motherboard firmware fix, dvd has no problem.
Actualy it seems logical that the dvd has no problem since with the wiikey you can region free the dvd to play imports.
Propably some pal-ntsc-jap chip is installed on the motherboard that gets screwed with the update.
Tommorow ill send my friends wii at nintendo i uninstall wiikey and seems like new ill infom you about the results(crossfingers).
I hope my litle experiment made some unserstant better of the wii full brick situation.

I screwed mine up trying to replace a WiiD with a WiiKey. I looked for drive replacements etc. etc. and never could find any.

So I called Nintendo to see what the price would be for a drive replacement. Of course I didn't tell them why the drive wasn't working so they offered the "Advanced Replacement Plan".

They will send you a refurbished Wii and once you get it via UPS you send the defective Wii back to them. They provide a return shipping label and you just use the packaging that the refurbished Wii was sent to you. Drop it off any UPS service location or you can ask the UPS guy to stay for a few and exchange the refurbished Wii with the defective 1 and give it to the driver.

You need a credit card for this because your charged $5 for shipping plus if they don't receive the defective Wii back your card will be charged for the Wii. If you send it back and once they scan it your card will not be charged no questions asked.

The downside is you will more then likely get a Wii back that has a D2C board (better then paying $90 for a replacement and still get a D2C board). Everything on the Wii including extra channels and Virtual Console games will be lost.

Lame... I have a D2C already. I don't wanna lose everything, (channels, friends, etc...) if I can spend $90 on a new drive I will.
"(better then paying $90 for a replacement and still get a D2C board)."
Where did you see a drive for $90? Got a link or number to call?

Thats the repair cost that Nintendo charges to repair the drive. It was between $85 and $90 dollars. I opted to go for the Advanced Replacement Plan because I had nothing important on the Wii to keep.

I'm sorry for being redundant but I don't wanna call Nintendo 'till I'm sure that's what I wanna do...
So you're saying that I can tell Nintendo it's broke and it's a non-warranty issue and they'll still fix it? Can I tell them I've opened it and they'll still replace the drive for me?
Again, sorry for being a pain, I'm just paranoid since I've messed with it.

They never asked me if I opened it or voided the warranty and I never told them I did. I just called and said the Wii wouldn't read disc anymore. They went through some trouble shooting tips and I said I tried all of it and it didn't work. They then offered the Advanced Replacement Plan.

So they sent me a refurbished Wii and I returned the defective 1 and that was that. No charge for anything but the $5 shipping cost. They then told me that the 1 year warranty will start over with the refurbished Wii.

If you don't want to take the above chance send your Wii to them and have them repair the drive for $90. Even if your lucky and find a replacement drive off the net it will probably cost you $90 or above.

If you do have an issue with the Advanced Replacement Plan and warranty (Which I didn't) all they would do is charge you for the $90 repair fee.

Ok, thank you for your help. I'm gonna remove the D2CKey tomorrow and give them a call and see what they say. Gonna try to clean up the inside as much as possible so hopefully if they look at the optical board they wont really notice anything.
If the worse case is that they call and say they see I've opened it and messed with it and my warranty is void and it'll cost $90, that's ok.
Thank you again.
