I want to save a movie to my harddrive, so i go through the ripping process using "magic dvd ripper" and i got all the files on my harddrive, but i cant open them or veiw the video, theres about 8 different files, and it says it cant open them because windows needs to know what created it.. is there anything i can use to fix this, or any way to get it all into one file so i can play the movie?

What files did you end up with. .vob or .avi

There's a bunch of options.

There's a bunch of software players that'll play DVD VOB files, both commercial and freeware.

You likely have Windows Media Player installed. It should play the VOB files OK. Just drop the VIDEO_TS.IFO file on WMP icon and it should play OK.

Media Player Classic (also free) will also play the VOB files. Just drop the VIDEO_TS.IFO on the icon or select the file from the File menu in MPC.


PowerDVD, Nero's Showtime, and WinDVD will all play DVDs in VOB file form, as well as some other commercial programs.


You can also rip DVDs as ISO image files and then mount the ISO images as virtual DVDs with progarms like Daemon Tools (free), Slysoft's Virtual CloneDrive (free), Nero's ImageDrive, Alcohol120%, etc. Once mounted the image appears as a DVD to your OS and can be played with any DVD software player. VLC Player (free) used to play ISO files without them first being mounted. I assume it still does.

If you have AVI files, both Media Player Classic and Windows Media Player will play them as well.

That happens if you open the VOB or IFO files themselves and there is no existing file association. Start WMP or MPC and select the VIDEO_TS.IFO file as the file to open.
