Sorry to do this but I am taking down all of my guides.

My original post for the reason I am doing this has been edited. Most of this stuff can be obtained by doing some research.

There are some here that have a good handle on the scene so hopefully someone else will step up to the plate and resume where I have left off.

Its been a nice ride and hope the best for all.

You should add this info to your first post:

Games that have been known to brick systems:

NTSC(U): Mario Strikers (PAL)

PAL: Super Mario Paper (NTSC)

How to fix Bricked NTSC(U): Download Brain Academy NTSC and do an update.

Ofcourse, this is just off the top of my head and the list could use expansion. Also my laptop is about to run out of batteries, but that info would be quite useful if added and expanded on.

Great thread, hopefully the Wii scene will eventually not have to worry about bricking anymore, but in the mean time, this is a very in-depth and explanative look at the problem and how to stop oneself from running into it. (Running into a brick wall? lol.. awful though, really was just awful).

Thanks for the suggestions you gave.

I did add a little more into the guide. I hope I didn't make it to confusing. LOL

The info is good and clear, but the organization isn't the greatest. It would be a lot more organized if you did it in a FAQ kind of fashion.

I.E.

Q:What does it mean to "brick" your wii

Answer: When you "brick" your Nintendo wii, it means you have rendered it useless, so you might as well use it as a brick.

Q: What is the difference between a "full brick" and a "semi-brick"

Answer: Full brick means that the Wii is completely useless and will not function whatsoever (i.e. loads an Opera style error screen as soon as you turn it on). Semi Brick means only some features of the wii have been rendered useless or "bricked", namely, the settings part.

Q: Why does the Wii get bricked in the first place/How does it happen exactly?

Answer: bla bla bla

Q: How can I avoid "bricking" my Wii?

Answer: bla bla bla

Q: Any specific games I should watch out for that are known to potentially cause problems?

Answer: If you have a PAL Wii (i.e. if you live in Europe) watch out for: __________

" " " " an NTSC-U Wii ("""" live in North America) watch out for: _________

" " " " an NTSC-J Wii (" " " live in Asia) watch out for: _________

REMEMBER: It is SAFE to play ANY region game AS LONG AS YOU UPDATE TO THE MOST RECENT PATCH THROUGH THE WII MENU FIRST! JUST BECAUSE IT'S POSSIBLE TO BRICK THE WII W/ A DIFFERENT REGION GAME DOESN'T MEAN YOU CAN NEVER PLAY THEM! JUST BE MORE CAREFUL!

Q: HELP! I have bricked my WII! Is there any hope??

A:
- If you semi-bricked your NTSC Wii using PAL Mario Strikers then: ______

- If you fully bricked your NTSC-J or PAL Wii using Super Paper Mario then: ______ (you're proper f**ked for the time being)

etc etc

Q: Whatever you can think of

A: Whatever you can think of

````````````````````````
Of course, this has many flaws and hopefully you can fill in the blanks, but I myself was a newbie (I still don't even have my wii modded yet it's still in the shop being done) and if I personally saw a FAQ organized the in this way, I would not have needed to make a new thread (and I assume that is the goal of this sticky). I didn't make a new thread ANYWAYS, but that's because I know how annoying it is for the regulars to see the same things repeatedly. However, it did take me a long time to get all the answers to my specific questions, and I think that is what causes all the repeated threads.
I think I've done the opposite. I've got a PAL and played Big Brain Academy USA and it asked for an update and that's when my problem began. Appears I can only play PAL now and none of my NTSC games are working. Does that means it's semi-bricked?
When I load an NTSC/USA game it loads into start then it goes black screen. I've tried four other games. There's also two channels of the weather and news now.
So I was wondering to resolve the issue if I put in Mario Strikers PAL will it reverse the effect and will it bring up an update and fix my problem?
Anyone got any ideas? Thanks
This shouldn't effect you from playing NTSC(U) games that are region compatible. If you can play PAL games you still should be able to play NTSC(U) Game Disc.
Make sure your Modchip still has region override turned on. (What Modchip do you have?)
Try going into your Wii Settings. If you get the Opera error message and can not get into the Wii Settings then you have a semi-brick issue.
UPDATE:
I have came across information that said you can get rid of those duplicated channels by formating your Wii system. (This will not be possible if your Wii Settings are bricked)
I don't have this problem So I can not verify if it will work. I just thought I would pass on the information for those that do have this problem.
For those that do not want to format the Wii or can not access the Wii Settings you can move the duplicated channels to a different page.
Do this by holding down the B+A at the same time (Make sure you hold down B first before pressing A) on the duplicated channel. Then "slide" the channel to another page. I know this doesn't remove the channel but at least it will remove it from the first page that the other Weather and News channels are on.
At this time there will be no game disc that will fix your PAL Wii. You more then Likley updated to a 2.2U firmware on your PAL system and will need to wait for another PAL update to be released that is higher then 2.2E to recover from a semi-brick.
Thanks for the reply. However I've tried formatting twice on my Wii and it's still there. I also checked my firmware version and appears to be 2.2E so I don't think it is bricked for some reason. (Luckily)
I can access all the settings, internet etc just certain games won't play like Mario Party and Big Brain Academy both USA. Sry if I mentioned this in another thread but what I think if you updated your Wii with Big Brain USA and you're on a PAL system you might be lucky and didn't brick it well that's what happened to me.
Based on the info given I checked and seems like my firmware is still right for PAL and also that I can still access everything. Except on the region patch compatability list it does say those two games I tried won't work.
I don't think I can get rid of those channels but I do think it's from the update that made it. So I might just need to wait for another updated PAL game to come out with later firware and update. But the two channels are just other than annoying it doesn't do much.
P.S. I still can't figure out if it's bricked or not. Oh well.
Thanks again
hey just a question:
I tried playing Super Mario Strikers Charged Football on my NTSC Wii today. Ofcourse, I had updated to 2.2u through the setup on the wii, but still when I put the game in the first time, it said "an update must be installed". I hesitantly pressed OK and it downloaded something. I went and checked, and the setting seem to be fine so I don't think it is bricked or semi bricked.
However, in previous threads larry, I remember you saying that if you already have your wii updated it will just "skip over" the update. Can you describe in detail what it means when it skips over? IE is it what happened to me or is it not even supposed to ask you to update at all?
Thanks for your help, and mario charged soccer is a blast to play especially online.
I've just updated my Jap Wii to 2.2J over the Internet. I've put in a NTSC-U game (Mario Party 8) and it comes up with the firmware update message with the usual 'OK' to go ahead.
The issue is, I also had Biohazard (NTSC-J) and this also produced the firmware update message prior to the 2.2J firmware upgrade and now, as expected, it doesn't show the message because it's running the latest update and the game just runs.
So why would the the NTSC-J game not ask for the update, yet the Mario Party 8 (NTSC-U) game still does? Am I OK to simply press 'OK' and it will check for the 2.2 update, determine it has and skip to the game, or is it going to attempt to perform an update to 2.2U and brick the console?
After you update via game disc your Wii remembers that information and will not try to update with that game disc again after running it for the first time.
When inserting a new game disc with an update it will prompt for an update no matter if your Wii is up to date or not. As long as you have the most current update the update will search and notice you have the latest update. It then will skip the update all together.
You would think it should check to see what update it has then if it needs to be updated the prompt will appear. But this is not what happens. The update prompt appears and you need to except the prompt so it can search and find what firmware you are running on your Wii.
If your Wii is current with the latest update it will skip the update. If the Wii is not current then it will flash the Wii with the new update on the disc.
Hey everyone..
I just burnt Big Brain Academy (NTSC/U) and I'm running a PAL (UK, if that matters) Wii with a Wiinja modchip installed.
Put the disc in and said it was initializing an update... quickly removed the disc as I've heard of NTSC games bricking PAL consoles. I currently have the 2.2E firmware installed - do I let it update?
Thanks!
Big Brain Academy is not region compatible with your PAL Wii system. So it is unplayable on your PAL Wii System.
Below is a guide to follow to find out what games are region compatible and what games are not.
Follow the guide below to find out if the game works or not on your Wii system...
PAL Wii Systems = Look under the sections of NTSC(U) TO PAL or NTSC(J) TO PAL
NTSC(U) Wii Systems = Look under the sections of PAL TO NTSC(U) or NTSC(J) TO NTSC(U)
NTSC(J) Wii Systems = Look under the sections of PAL TO NTSC(J) or NTSC(U) TO NTSC(J)
Hi Larry,
This thread is exactly what I have been looking for since I bought my Wii last week. I live in Asia but bought a US Wii with firmware 2.0(U). The alternative is Japanese Wii (which sold for US$100 cheaper), but I can't read Japanese. According to the seller, my US Wii has a Wiikey modchip in it.
After playing Wii Sports for the first time, I tried the Wii settings and activate Wi-Fi (for wireless Internet), but declined when Wii asked whether I want to do system update. From there, I inserted a copied game (for the first time) and it asked for an update. I turned off Wii's wireless immediately and turned the Wii off. When I turned my Wii on again and inserted any copied game, it still asked for an update. The seller said I should go get Super Paper Mario and clicked OK, which I did (with Wii's Wi-Fi off), and it did the job. From then on I can play all copied games fine, except some occurrence whereby there is an error message but easily solved with turning off Wii and reinsert.
To be honest, after trying several copied games, the only fun game is the original Wii Sports that comes in the package. But since my Wii comes with pre-installed Wiikey (even I'm not asking for it), I have to learn how to deal with a modded Wii.
At the moment, I don't have any problem playing copied games: Super Mario Paper, Cooking Mama (my daughters love it), Ultimate Alliance, Meet the Robinsons, Pirates of Carribean, Sponge Bob, Cars, Wii Play, etc. I guess they are NTSC(U) game, but honestly I couldn't figure them out whether they are NTSC(U) or not (how you figure it out anyway?).
After reading about it, I really would like to download the Opera browser and be able to browse the Internet with the Wii. As I wrote above, I have a Wireless (Wi-Fi) setup at home, and my Wii already detected it, but I chose to de-activate it because I have been reading about bricked Wiis and I just need to find more info first. You and your thread seems to be the perfect information source for this matter.
Could you advise what to do for me? Should I:
(1) stick with my firmware 2.0(U), since I don't have any problems whatsoever (apart from curiosity to connect to the Internet wireless-ly using the Wii)
(2) do a system (or firmware) upgrade (to 2.2(U))? What if the update (or future update will) consist of an optical drive update as you thought what happened with the 2.0 update, or any other thing that would render my Wii bricked or semi-bricked in the future? But I guess I can't download Opera browser without doing a system update, right?
(3) I have downloaded Wii Brick Blocker (rar file) version 1.3 from the French website. What exactly should I do with it? How exactly "to run this on the Game ISO to patch it". Sorry, I am a complete newbie on Wii, appreciate any further clarification.
Sorry for the long message, since I just want to be concise for the first time. Next one will be much shorter. Many many thanks.
Kind regards,
Andi
Below is a guide to follow when playing a Game Disc that has a firmware update on it.
NTSC(U) Game + NTSC(U) Wii = No chance of a region brick
PAL Game + PAL Wii = No chance of a region brick
NTSC(J) Game + NTSC(J) Wii = No chance of a region brick
---------------------------------------------------------------------
NTSC(U) Game + PAL/NTSC(J) Wii = Brick is possible if Wii is not updated with latest firmware.
PAL Game + NTSC(U)/NTSC(J) Wii = Brick is possible if Wii is not updated with latest firmware.
NTSC(J) Game + PAL/NTSC(U) Wii = Brick is possible if Wii is not updated with latest firmware.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
The safest (100%) way to play your Wii without a possible region brick is to play game disc that are the same region as your Wii system. (If you use downloaded games make sure the Game Disc is the correct region and not patched from another region)
If you Region Patch a game disc or enable your region free option on your Modchip follow the below steps to protect yourself from a region brick...
1) Update your Wii to the latest firmware version available from Nintendo. (As of now 2.2 is the latest) To find out what version you are currently on do the below...
Click on the Wii symbol in the bottom left hand corner. Go to Wii settings. The firmware version is in the top right hand corner. (2.2U = USA/2.2E = Europe/2.2J = Japan)
2) There is a new program out called Wii Brick Blocker. You can run this on the Game ISO to patch it. It changes a string on the Game Disc which disables the update feature on the game disc.
http://www.wii-addict.fr/forum/viewtopic.php?id=2017
The site is in French but all you need to do is download the 1.3 version which is multi-language. It also has added a Game Info option which tells you what region the game disc is and creator etc. etc.
I would recommend users to do both steps above. This will protect you even more from a region brick issue.
(If you do not use Wii Brick Blocker keep in mind you will be prompt for the update if it is on the game disc. As long as you have the latest firmware update on your Wii it is alright to except the update. It will just skip the update once it finds you have the latest update installed)
If anyone thinks I forgot to add anything let me know.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Here is a more indepth explanation of why a region brick is possible and how to fix it.
Nintendo has placed region locks on the hardware of the Wii. Making the hardware inoperable when the incorrect region firmware is flashed to it. This is why your Wii can become partially or completely bricked by updating with the wrong region firmware.
Brick Issues:
Complete Brick - Wii is bricked completely. Automaticly boots to the Opera error screen. All hardware is non-responsive.
FIX: NO FIX AT THIS TIME
Semi-Brick - Wii settings are non-responsive (Opera error screen) Disc Channel is responsive and Game Disc's are still playable.
Fix: Update Wii with a Game Disc (SAME REGION AS YOUR Wii) that has a higher firmware then the firmware that caused the semi-brick (This has to be done with a Game Disc since Wii Settings are bricked and no way of updating Via system settings)
Example:
Mario Strikers PAL has a 2.1E firmware update. Some NTSC(U) Wii owners bricked the Wii Settings with this update. Mario Strikers flashed the NTSC(U) Wii from 2.0U to 2.1E firmware.
Big Brain Academy NTSC(U) can recover the Wii Settings brick by running the update on the game disc which is 2.2U This changing the 2.1E firmware back to 2.2U firmware unbricking the Wii Settings because the correct firmware is now running on the Wii.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
My Theory of why some Wii owners have had a complete brick and some have had a semi-brick is this.
I think the 2.0 U/E/J update had an Optical drive update with it. Which flashed the Wii DVD drive with the wrong region firmware. This not letting the Wii DVD drive initialize during boot up giving the Opera error screen.
2.1 or above firmware updates are only a system update (New Channels/Parental Control etc. etc.) This only bricking the Wii Settings with the wrong firmware keeping the drive operational because it didn't receive an update.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
WARNING TO THOSE WHO STILL HAVE 1.0 U/E/J FIRMWARE INSTALLED...
I wanted to add this information for others because I believe you can still get a complete region brick if playing any game disc that comes with a firmware update and your Wii still has the original 1.0 firmware.
I came across a thread the other day of a member claiming they completely bricked their NTSC(U) Wii with Mario Strikers PAL version. This was the first time I have came across a thread with a member claiming this. I started thinking how this could have been possible and came to this conclusion...
Game Disc with Updates on them have multiple updates on the disc. This is necessary because other firmware updates need to be applied before becoming up to date with the latest firmware. If your Wii firmware is 1.0 it will need to be updated with the 2.0/2.1 and 2.2 update to become current.
Since Super Paper Mario NTSC(U) update completely bricked PAL Wii's due to the 2.0U firmware then more then likley a 2.0E firmware can do this to an NTSC(U) Wii.
I know there is allot of information included in this post and I hope it isn't confusing either. But there has been allot of threads started on this issue and I just wanted to make a guide and an explanation of what the consequences can be by flashing your Wii with the wrong region firmware.
Remember to protect your investment when playing out of region game disc...
1) Update your Wii to the latest firmware version available from Nintendo. (As of now 2.2 is the latest)
2) Download Wii brick Blocker and disable the firmware on the Game Disc...
All the questions you have asked is covered in the guide.
If you don't understand it then maybe you need to take the Wiikey out and not play any backup games on your Wii.
I am sorry if you find this rude but the reason for the guide was to stop people from asking the same questions you have asked above.
The guide is simple to follow so read the full guide and do what has been suggested to do to protect you from a region brick issue.
Ok. Thanks anyway. The sad thing is that I don't know how (and am not techie enough) to take the Wiikey out myself and the small store that sell it don't want to bother doing so (unlike in US or elsewhere where people offering modding service). I guess I'm stuck with a modded Wii. I guess I will do a system / firmware update then to (mainly) download Opera and access Internet Channel while I'm having no problem whatsoever playing backup games (yet) ...
I have said multiple times in the guide above to make sure your Wii is updated to the latest firmware to protect from a region brick.
If you don't want to update then only play NTSC(U) (North America) Game Disc on your NTSC(U) Wii system.
