Thanks for a great post.
I got my Wii JPN bricked by eather mario paper or mario striker.
It only got semi-bricked,because i can play but got this Opera error when entering SETTINGS.

I understand i got 2 update to a higher update than the pal/ntsc-U using a JPN version/game.correct me if i'm wrong.

I don't got a internet connection 2 my Wii, so is it enought using a new release japanese ver.game to maintain the latest firmware or do i need to connect to internet to get this update ??

Is it possible to update my firmware through burning the latest update on a dvd ?

Hope i'm not 2 confusing about my questions as my english is not 100%.

MORE POWER 2 larrylje !!

Thank U !!

The only way to update your Wii is with the Internet or using a Game Disc to do it.

If you do not have the Internet and use a game disc make sure you have the same region game disc as your Wii before doing the update.

I think the newest game that has been released that has a firmware update for the NTSC(J) Wii system is...

Donkey Kong Taru Jet Race

Thanks for the fast Reply.

Ok, hopefully the unit will restore the settings after updating using the game.
Does that mean if I'll try to play any release of NTSC-u/Pal newer than the latest NTSC-j it will block my settings again ?
or only selected games (NTSC-u/pal) comes with this bricking update ?

I guess i'm more prone to bricking as i'm using NTSC-u/pal games on my wii-j due to the English version of the games.I don't know to speak Japanese.... so why am i stuck with a Japanese unit ??? hmmm.....
The good thing so far is the compability list is in favor to the NTSC-j..i think.

I been playing on my wii for less than a day before it got bricked.... i didn't know better.but now i know.

I'll be watching your news,BIG help !!

Thank U !!

Wii master larrylje,

I have a Jap Wii...a jap pokemon battle revolution has updated the firmware to 2.0J. I dont have a wireless router, so i wont be able to update the firmware online.

Im planning to play Super Paper Mario (US). Im so afraid to brick my Wii...so just to clarify, since SPM would look for firmwares below 2.0..Am I safe to play the game?

Forgive me for this dumb question.

Many thanks!!!

@djtiesto

Either find the Donkey Kong Taru Jet Race and update with that Japanese game (Should update your Wii to 2.1J or 2.2J)

Or use Wii Brick Blocker linked above in the guide to patch (Disable) the Super Paper Mario update.

I am almost positive that SPM has a 2.0U update so it shouldn't brick your Japanese Wii but it would be safer to run Wii Brick Blocker also on the SPM ISO before burning.

But I would also suggest getting the above Donkey Kong game to update your Wii to even a higher firmware.

Hi all,

Sadly, having the latest up to date firmware is not enough to protect your Wii from bricking...

For example, Big Brain Academy US does brick 2.2 out of its region...

The only way is to remove the updates from every ISO before launching them.

r u saying that Big Brain Academy NTSC-U will not brick a 2.2 NTSC-J system if its been patched to remove the update?

Larry, thank you for the advise. I turned wi-fi on, updated firmware to 2.2U, went to shopping channel, downloaded internet (Opera browser) and everybody vote channels (on June 30). I hesitated whether to turn on WiiConnect24 but I did. My News and Weather channels works fine, and I like them especially News (setting to LA, CA weather although Im in Asia). Is everybody vote channel much fun for you?

If you don't want to update then only play NTSC(U) (North America) Game Disc on your NTSC(U) Wii system.

@robot5 did not try myself because from what I know this game won't work on a NTSC-J anyway. But yes if you remove the update it shouldn't brick it. But again, that would be useless as you won't be able to play it, well again, not sure I did not try...

Hi, this is my first post.

I have a Japanese Wii with a wiikey and I semi-bricked it a while ago with Brain Academy

does anyone know if DK Taru Race will unbrick my wii?

and I have a doubt

correct me if im wrong but

if you have the earlier update like 2.2J and you insert a game with 2.1U, as soon as you enter the disc channel it will automatically start to fill a blue bar with no confirmation button(ok) to click

it means that the game is only checking the version and will not update your wii

and if a game has a earlier update than your system then it will prompt a confirmation screen with a OK button, if you dont click the button it will not brick your wii

i mean, if the game runs the "update" without a confirmation of yours then you dont need to fear, but if it prompts a OK screen then it WILL brick your wii if you allow the update

can i use it as reference for playing future games or i misunderstood it?

thank you very much

Hello. First post here.

I recently acuired the US version of Pokemon Battle Revolution. I read that it would do a semi-brick on my Japanese Wii, unless patched with Region Blocker.

If a game has been patched with region blocker, is there a way to tell? Would the file structure be different if the disc was put in a PC? Would the Wii display a splash screen for the game as opposed to the "Wii" image on the channel selection screen?

Thanks in advance!

Hi there,

My daughter just bought a Wii last week and being a nice dad and overseas at the time, I bought her some games. NTSC it turns out, and not from my region (Australia).

I have read this thread and was wondering if there is a way to copy the disk (is it a dvd?), convert it to PAL, then make a new disk of it to use in the Wii, rather than a mod chip etc. Sorry if this is a dumb question, but I am new to this.

Thanks JC

At this time you will need a Modchip no matter if you use the Original or Backup game.

Nintendo has region locks on the game system hardware. So that means you can not play an NTSC(U) Wii Game on a PAL system without using some sort of region override modification.

As of now region patcher's and Modchips that have region free capabilities are the only way to bypass these region lock systems.

In order to use a region patcher you would need to create a backup which would still take a Modchip to run the patched game.

You could use the original game disc but you still would need a modchip to bypass the region lock codes.

There soon will be software released that will bypass the region lock codes and let you play imports on your Wii Systems. But these are still in development and as far as I know have not been released as of yet. Below is an example of software that will bypass the region locks...

http://kotaku.com/gaming/wii/wii-freeloader-on-the-way-222054.php

So at this time the only option you have is to install a Modchip in the Wii system. If you do decide to buy a Modchip I would suggest buying a Modchip that has region override capabilities on the chip itself. (Wiikey/WiiD)

The reason for this is so you can use the original game disc without making backups and having to use a region patcher on the backup itself. Backing up a Wii DVD takes some time and effort. Plus you have other hardware to buy. If your interested on how to make backups then go to the link below...

http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/471073

You will also need to make sure the Wii games are region compatible with your daughters PAL Wii system.

To find out if the NTSC(U) games are region compatible with her PAL system you will need to go to the link below and look up the NTSC(U) Games in the list.

The section you want to look under is NTSC(U) TO PAL

http://wiki.gbatemp.net/index.php?title=...patibility_List

Also make sure you read the guide in this thread to protect her Wii from being region bricked.

@Rsyss DK Taru Race will not unbrick. I had my JP-WII updated to 2.2J before it was semi-bricked (PBR NTSC-U). Maybe Dragon Quest Swords......

hi there. so this is the first thing you're supposed to do when you purchase your wii? the virrual console update will auto detect what type of wii you have (NTSC/J/E, etc)?

thank you.

For those wanting it clarified or put in layman's terms read the guide fully.

It clearly states on what to do to protect your Wii from a region brick issue.

If you can't follow the guide then maybe you need to uninstall the Modchip and not use it at all.

For those asking if someone could try a particular game or if a particular game will unbrick their semi-bricked Wii download the game yourself and try it and report back if it worked or not.

No it will not install a higher firmware then 2.2J, if it has firmware update at all. My jap wii was already 2.2J before it got semi bricked. It did not unbrick mine.

I purchased a NTSC-J Wii and have semi bricked my wii with Mario Strikers Charged PAL. I'm looking for a fix, so would appreciate any help.

According to Wikipedia, release dates for JAPANESE games are:
Donkey Kong Barrel Blast June 28, 2007
Dragon Quest Swords: The Masked Queen and the Tower of Mirrors July 12, 2007
Jikkyo- Powerful Pro Yakyu- Wii July 19, 2007
Momotaro Dentetsu 16July 19, 2007
Guilty Gear XX Accent Core July 26, 2007
Mario Party 8 July 26, 2007
Mobile Suit Gundam MS Sensen July 26, 2007
Dewy's Adventure July 26, 2007
Jigsaw Puzzle: Kyo no Wanko July 26, 2007
Puyo Puyo July 26, 2007

I'd appreciate if people could post whether any of those soon to be released games contain JAP updates or not.

I personally have tried Donkey Kong Barrel Blast, but it contains no update.

@slping Thanks for the listing. If people could post their findings it'll be helpful. The semi-brick prob is getting more dreadful as people are reporting that even a web update will not stop and out of region semi-brick. (Pokemon Battle Revolution bricking a Jap Wii)

My Wii is bricked by Mario Strikers. Since then, I've tried Pokemon(USA) and DK Taru Jet Race(J) to no avail.

Why are you trying to use 2 different region disc to unbrick your Wii system?

You said your Wii was bricked by Mario Strikers. So I would assume your Wii is either U(North America) or J(Japanese). Which region do you have?

If it is a U(North America) Wii system then why are you trying to fix the brick issue with DK Taru Jet Race(J)?

If it is a J(Japanese) Wii system then why are you trying to use Pokemon(USA) to fix the brick issue?

I would suggest reading the guide on the first page again and try to get a better understanding on how to prevent a region brick issue and how to fix it if the fix is available for your brick issue.

and if so.. it doesn't matter if I update or not with NTSC(U)games back-up or original with my NTSC(U) Wii system.. CORRECT?

that way I will just stay away from all other region.
