It should work! You must be doing something wrong please give more information.
You can try the link below to get the main cocept encoder. It is faster than TMPGEnc but tends to make larger mpeg's

The free version leaves a small water mark on top left of your video but i have no problem with that and hardly notice it

Please try and be more specific! What type of file is it? and which encoder? Can you play the file on your PC? The more information you give the more we can help.

First, the Mainconcept Encoder does not support AVI files so don't try that!
If your getting the error message every time you try and convert, then it will not work.
From the filename: ts.divx-pain.AVI, TS tells me that TS_Centropy was the group that released the AVI. DIVX tells me that the AVI is encoded with the DivX codec which makes it incompatable with TMPGEnc Plus for the moment.

Here is a piece of text from their web site

The MainConcept MPEG Encoder is a standalone AVI and QuickTime to MPEG converter featuring the same fast, high-quality technology that's used in popular video editing applications. The friendly interface makes it easy to convert files quickly, and the batch encoding makes it easy to be productive without having to stay at the computer. You can even combine multiple files into a single MPEG file.

Try before you buy! A watermarked demo version is available in the links below. Current registered users can upgrade to the new version by downloading the demo, uninstalling the previous version, and installing the demo using the serial number from the previous version.

If you just want to put an AVI file onto a DVD to watch on your standalone player and want to do it with one program get NeoDVD it's a simple program for beginners but you do lose some picture quality.
