Alright I'm planning to get a Japanese PSP cause I want the silver one. I barely know anythin about firmware stuff so I'm a complete noob. Some questions..can someone help me out.
1. How many different regions of firmware exist? e.g Japanese/US/UK
2. What's the difference between each countries firmware?
3. Which countries FW is the standard FW people refer to when talking about it?
3. If the PSP I buy comes with firmware 3.11 does this mean it's a Japanese FW?
4. If I want to upgrade the 3.11 FW to 3.50 FW, will it only work if I upgrade to the Japanese 3.50 FW? Or can I use any?
5. If not, what happens if you try upgrading to a different 3.50 FW?
6. Is it possible to brick your PSP from upgrading (that was unsuccessful) or only from downgrading?
On ebay a seller is also selling a silver PSP with 1.5 firmware.
7.Would this most likely be the Japanese 1.5 FW?
8.If it is, can I upgrade it to 3.40-OE? Would this be the US OE or the Japanese OE? Or is there only the US one?
9. I imagine the seller downgraded the PSP to 1.5 since you can't buy them as 1.5 now right....so does that mean it can't be upgraded to official firmware like 3.50?
Sorry for all the questions. This stuff is really confusing. Thanks

1)There are 3 that we know of or need to know of, Jap/UK/US. (Probably others for HK etc though?)
2)The main difference between regions in firmware is region coding, US is region 1, UK s region 2 etc. Obviously language, thirdly features, like Japs have PSTV and Playstation Spot. These don't work outside of Japan anyway.
3)No, not necessarily, but it's easy enough to see if it's Jap by looking for the PSTV and Playstation Spot in the XMB.
4)You are best upgrading to the 3.50 of whichever firmware version the PSP is meant to have, for compatability reasons, although it will allow you to upgrade to other regions.
5)Nothing, you get a PSP with a different firmware region, but from my experience upgrading my Jap PSP with a NA firm kept all the Jap features. So who knows.
6)Any firmware upgrade/downgrade leaves a possiblity of bricking, however, if you do it through Sony official firmware it's probably covered by the warranty.
7)Hard to say, far as I know there was no Silver Jap PSP back when 1.5 existed. I bought my Jap white 2 years ago and that came with 2.5, so if it's a downgrade it could be any region, but that doesnt really matter.
8)The DaX 3.40 OE-A is US, i had it on my Jap PSP worked fine, but it's dying now with DaX gone, Team M33 has taken his place, I suggest you check out their latest custom firmware. Worked beautifully and has some to die for features that DX didn't quite get around to.
9)If it was downgraded to 1.5 then epending on how he did it you probably can't upgrade to official 3.5 correct, but, you can upgrade to Dax 3.40 OE-A and M33 3.52 M33 directly from the 1.5. So unless you have your heart set on official firmware, go straight up to hte latest custom.

No prob, I have learned a lot about this scene in the last few weeks ... (I joined the scene hours before DaX left by downgrading to 3.40 OE-A (if you can call it downgrading) and was gutted when i heard the news. Soon as M33 popped up though that soon changed.
I live to learn, and I like to pass on my knowledge where I can.

1. as of 3.52 all EBOOT.PBP firmware updates have been IDENTICAL, there is no such thing as differnt country firmwares (despite what sony say on their websites). Language and other settings are stored in flash1, not flash0. these are unaffected by updating FW.
