AR MAX not recognizing thumb drive

hi i have an action replay max. i don't have an internet adaptor to my ps2. my goal is to transfer a game save to my ps2 memory card. i have read several posts on this forum that give instructions for this. however my problem is that when i insert my thumb drive into action replay it responds as if nothing has happened. in other words it's not being recognized. i am using a PNY 1 GB thumb drive. what do i do to fix this problem? maybe i am just following the precedure in the wrong way. could someone maybe describe what to do in step form?
