I bought a new laptop with Vista installed. I'm trying to install XP instead but when I get to the setup page and hit enter to set up windows. I get this "Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer. etc... Setup cant continue." Vista doesn't work well with all my programs so I want XP. Thanks.
hit any key to boot from cd
Windows XP Home Edition Setup
to set up windows XP now, press ENTER
called gateway and they said downgrading the OS would void some of the warranty. She said I would "have to write 0's to my hard drive."
She also said I should go the to gateway website and run the "gwscan" but I haven't able to find it. Imaginge that. Just wanted to see what you thought of this.

to set up windows XP now, press ENTER
Next you will see:
Quote:Windows XP License agreement, read, and if you agree press "F8" to continue, press "ESC" if you disagree. If you disagree setup will finish.
Hit F8
The next screen should list the partions.
Like this
C: Partition1 [NTSF] 16349 MB <16341 MB free>
D: Partition1 [NTSF] 25589 MB <25581 MB free>
Yoy may just have the C line.
Select each line using the up and down arrow.
Press D and hit "Enter"
Next it wll ask if you are sure about the delete.
Press L and hit "Enter"
Do that for each letter (C,D,E, etc)
Until you see only Unpartitioned space.
Now you can create new partitions.
Last night I ran the GWSCAN which wrote 0's the hard drive. I press enter to set up windows XP. It then says "Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer". I have pressed F8 and it doesn't do anything. Any other suggestions? Thanks again.
You might need SATA drivers for your hard disk. In my computer, if I load a windows XP cd without loading the drivers (Hit F"something" to load 3rd party Drivers)<-When XP is loading at the bottom) it will not detect my HDs.
That would be F6.
I have a RAID 0 setup and have to load the drivers from a floppy.
There is supposed to be a work around from MS but I've never seen it work.
Forgot to ask if your hard drive is enabled for the boot in the BIOS?
It says I need to download some drivers. "Once you have determined the type of hard drive you have go to the motherboard/computer manufacturers website and download the SATA or PATA drivers for that board. Make sure if the files are compressed that you extract them to your floppy disks. Now copy the extracted files, (Or downloaded file) onto a blank floppy disk. "
I'm not too familiar w/ all this. I don't know where to get these drivers. I've found one but I don't know if it's the right one. I was hoping someone could help me locate the drives I need.
edit
Done for the chipset, that should get XP to install.
Knock on wood and cross your fingers and toes. lol
Working on finding download wait for edit
First problem is do you have a floppy drive.
No, get a USB floppy drive. See link.

Have you made any changes? Then run the current configuration scan.
Download the first zip file. Open the zip file.
I am sorry at this point my advise may go wrong.
I am on a public PC so I am limited.
Edit
Try this first. Just open the zip file.
Put all the files and folders on the floppy.
Jump to the part about the F6 durring re-install
If this does not work try this next part.
There should be an setup.exe file.
Move the file to C:\setup.exe.
If you had XP I would say go to Start.
Find and click on Run. With Vista I have no idea.
So find the command line (Run) and type C:\setup.exe -A
Note it may be C:\setup.exe/ -A
This should put the files in C:\Program Files\Intel\InfInst
(see the read me file at the download site for more info)
Put all these files on a floppy.
When you first start the re-install it will say
"Press F6 if you need to install a third party SCSI or Raid driver"
Press F6
If you have pressed the "F6" key on time then the following screen will eventually appear.
Press "S" to load in the drivers you downloaded above
You will now be prompted for the floppy disk you created earlier, put it in the drive and press "ENTER"
The list that may come up should have one of these 943GML or 82801GBM
Select one and press "ENTER"
If this does not work there are other work-a-rounds.
Later you may need this video driver.
Check the read me file how to install
