My dad has a relatively new Dell and running Windows XP. He's been copying some of his older tapes to DVD so he can play them in the PC and sometimes the DVD player says there's no disc in there when there is a disc in there and other times it says drive is full when there's no disk in there.

He is copying them on one of those VHS to DVD recorders. Could that have an effect on why sometimes the DVD won't play the movie one day but will play it the next?

I don't see though why the DVD player would show disc space full if there's nothing in there.

Any ideas?

Are the disks being finalized on the DVD recorder.
Do the disks play ok on the DVD recorder after being finalized?
What type of disk is being used(DVD-RAM, DVD-R, DVD+R, etc).

What programs is he using to backup the store bought DVDs? There are many different ways to copy your DVDs. Give us as much info as you can, type of programs, DRM removal software, types of media, burn speeds, error logs created when burns fail. We can't answer the problem- "Dad is having troubles with DVD movies he's buying from the store"

Be specific :) and welcome to Afterdawn

Sorry about that.

My dad tries to play store bought DVD movies and at times the DVD player responds that it cannot read the movie.

Other times there is NO movie in there, but the drive reads full.

Hi I'm hoping for an answer if someone can help me :)

My dad's got a DVDROM on his personal PC and it usually plays legitimate store-bought DVD movies. However he's got a few which will not play. When he puts them in the player doesn't recognize them, says there's no disk in the drive and it will not play.

What's he using to play them?
Try VLC or Media Player Classic.

Cyberlink. Windows Media wouldn't play most of his DVD's.

WMP won't play an encrypted (commercial DVD).
It should play burned DVD's if it has an DVD decoder available.
Cyberlink (a purchased program?) should play any DVD.

He put one of the DVD's in his regular DVD player (connected to Television) and it worked there, then he took it out and put it into his PC and then it played. He'll try the other one.

What is the most widely used program for playing DVD's?
