Apologies for butting in Martin :)
@51 sounds like your box has a faulty capacitor and it has nothing to do with firmware, I can give you instructions on how to fix it, BTW if you had version 4 on it for months its a genuine box.

You can test them across the power rail Martin, easier to test on an EV hence why you remove the C12 first as it is hard to test without doing this as they are a hard cap to see physical bulging, only time you know they are causing problems is when you see these type of symptoms.

hi sc0user, so you reckon it has faulty capacitor? I'm not quite sure what that is or indeed how to fix it, sounds complicated, lol. I'd be gratefull if you could tell me how to fix this problem. I thought my box was a clone and tried putting firmware v2.57ee_fixed on it but as you might suspect the box dies before getting anywhere near the 100% mark. Thanks for the help guys.

Sounds difficult but it is quite easy, if you dont feel comfortable doing it, bring it to your local TV repair shop with these instructions:
1.Remove the cap (c21) electrolytic near the ribbon on the psu board.
2.Boot the box , it should boot to on and function correctly , the psu will hum ignore it , just let it boot to ON ,then turn it back off.
3.Replace electrolytic cap (c11) 1000 mic @10v on the psu board , resolder (c21)
thats it done.
You can get caps from Maplins they can also be found on fleebay item No 110091935709.
Takes a few minutes to do, thats it.

They are standard jtag cables that have been used since day one, more than likely unbuffered type you have seen.

Its a cabling fault in his house, as he has split his cabling so many times. If he trys it directly from the incoming feed it will work.

Yep just tell him to use a good quality cable, e.g. CT100, and use good quality RF twist on connectors and good quality splitters, all can be got in Maplins. This will dramatically improve his signal level/quality.
