I have read several threads that state that using 16x speed media should be avoided (for backing up ps2 games). One board member however did tell me that 16x media is fine (Sony, Verbatim). Does any1 esle use 16x media if they do what speed is 16x media best burnt at?

as a rule of thumb always burn at half the speed of the disk so for 16x burn at 8x. 8x at 4x etc.

i would highly recommend using 8x though for better compatabilty and less errors while burning. 16x would put unwanted stress on the laser while reading the disk

pretty soon you won't have a choice as being the 8x speed media will be phased out leaving 16x only. so YES burn the 16x at 8x max

the above is correct, 16X is pretty much the new standard and it is hard to find any quality 8X media in retail stores. I buy all of mine online at Newegg.com or supermediastore.com because they have quality brands (Verbatim and Toiyo Yuden) and they still sell 8X

The 16X i have done i did at 4X burning speed and they worked just fine, although they were DVD+R and booktyped to DVD-Rom which helps.

I think he was referring to me who told him 16x was fine. The only problem I think people had with 16x was because they were burning them way too slowly or way too fast. That and burners were not as they are now. As for 16x putting more strain on the laser then 8x I think that's nothing but conjecture.

also alot of people have trouble with the 16x media because there drive firmware is not up to date to handle it

as long as you havnt messed up the disk or the files or anything, you should be able to burn at a 4x speed and it work fine. Thats what i always do. My PS2 lags at 6x or anything higher so i would definately recommend 4x.

Alright, I just got a stack of 50 DVD-Rs, Verbatim. 16x.

I realized they were DVD-Rs after opening...but eh. What kind of speed should I use with them? I tried 2x and it was really slow and laggy.

yeah, the + or - shouldnt really matter...they both work fine. Its just always good to go for 4x...no higher, no lower. Even when you go lower (which is retarted because it should produce better quality at lower speeds) it sometimes tends to lag still just as it would at a 6x speed.

Yes they do. PS2s tend to like DVD-Rs much more then DVD+Rs.

agree, they should play both but more PS2's are compatible with DVD-R discs. That is the only discs i ever use for games.
