I've always thought that Maxtors were alittle quiter than the Western Digitals. Both work fine in the Xbox though.

Most games are around 2gb in size. Some as small as 600mb and some an large as 6gb. All depends on the game. Also some games can be decreased in size if you delete the Demo's and foreign language folders.

you dont need to buy a new and bigger hard drive for your XBOX unless....

you want to back up your games on the xbox hard drive
like RustyDog said some games are large
and if you want'em backed up on Hard Dive you'll need more space than xbox hard drive can give
that's why the upgrade to a bigger HDD
but is not needed if you gonna play your back ups from a DVD-R or CD-RW (if it can fit in the CD)

now if you want to upgrade the HDD
to get a good price I recommend you to try this website

1- a XBOX with modchip and bios of your choice
2- Evolution X dashboard installed on XBOX
3-If you want to back up to hard drive
you'll need a program called Pxloader (already on evox)

or
if you wana make your own DVD-R back ups
with the modchip ON
from your PC FTP the XBOX with game in DVD drive
extract the game from the xbox to your pc
expect the file to be some GB in size

when the game files are on you PC

convert the files to .iso (Xiso)
and then burn with Nero as burn image file
to your DVD-R or CD-RW <-- if game is small

the chip you are talking about has a bios flashed alrerady
but that bios only function is to help you reflash the chip with a hacked bios
(found on IRC or some websites)
say :X2_4977 or newer
after flashed with a hacked bios
you can play back ups (if you already have)

now If you want to make back ups of your games
then need to install evolutionX dashboard
so you can FTP the XBOX and back up the game to pc and make the ISO and burn it from there

the chip
has a little piece of software inside
aka the bios
the X-ecuter has a 1mb of memory
your gonna fill that 1 mb of memory with
a software called X2_4977.bin
that software (hacked_illegal) is 256kb in size
256kb X 4 = 1024kb = 1mb

that way your chip will have a new bios.bin
and It will let you play backups

here in this forums are a lot of tutorials and explanations about all that

reflash = reprogram

Just to make sure you know. The v1.5 Xbox is the only version that can't be modded without Soldering. M$ removed power and ground from the motherboard LPC on this version so a solderless chip will not work unless you solder 2 wires from the motherboard to the LPC.

System-Mods.com has very good tutorials for X2 installs.

The LPC is the part of the motherboard that the pogo pins on the solderless chips rest on. Anything after a v1 and early v1.1 Xbox will have empty LPC holes and therefore need to be filled with solder. The Chameleon adapter is the only one that I know of that has a way around filling in the LPC holes by using small rivets instead of soldering.

Pretty much when you go to the store to buy an XBox first look at the MFG Date on the back of the box through the cut out hole.
You can get a pretty good idea of what version it is by the MFG Date. Anything after 08/03 will be a v1.5

You lost me, What does the PS2 have to do with the Xbox?

If you can get an XBox dated early 2003 then you can be sure it's not a v1.5
Just check a few stores and look at the date before buying it. If the Xbox is not easily accessable, behind the counter or something, just ask to check it out and pretend your reading the back of the box and take a peek at the MFG Date. In the US most bigger stores have displays on the sales floor so checking dates is pretty easy.
