Need, not really. Should you get one, yes.
They are about $10 and another $20 or so to have it installed by someone. Well worth the price since your other option is having a $50 laser installed at about $35 install price.

Is it hard to install it myself? I have opened PS2s before and dome some stuff. I'm not a complete noob in the area. So I might be able to.

Also, what's a reliable site to get the Swap Magic disc from?

I would recommend getting swapmagic discs from clearxbox.com
I got mine from there for like $23 shipped.

as far as the laser fix. If you have decent soldering skills and understand technical schematics sheets. Then yes, should be a breeze to install.

They are not as good as my old V7, but i have no complaints with my modded V12 either.
V12 Slimline PS2 in HD Combo case with 250GB internal hard drive, DMS4 Pro modchi and Summone laser fix.
