Hi I had a psp back when they first came out but shortly after it broke, anyway i have a psp again now but im completely out of touch with all there is to it other than thaht i can play emulators, homebrew and backups on my 1.5 firmware psp.

Should I upgrade to the new custom firmware 3.51 m33, what are the benefits over a 1.5 and was there any point in buyin a 1.5 psp if the 3.51 m33 firmware can do all that a 1.5 can?

Ps I have a ps3, the main attraction for me would be possibly connectivity between the psp and ps3.

Thanks for any help on this, I've tried looking around but it feels like im jupmin halfway through the understanding of all thatthere is on offer on a psp and how it works. (e.g flash0 talk which im just ... o.O ... yeh...)

Well, to start off, version 1.5 is a very primitive firmware; it doesn't have an internet browser, it doesn't support high-quality AVC format videos, and more importantly, it cannot play UMDs that requires a higher firmware. Sure, you can run homebrew applications with it, but that's about all it can do.

Now let's move on. Yes, I would suggest that you upgrade to a custom firmware, either to a 3.40 OE-A or the latest one - 3.51 m33. With these firmware, it's like having an official firmware with the same exact features, PLUS the ability to run homebrew applications. Isn't that great? =)

So yeah, if I were you, I would definitely upgrade to a custom firmware. ;)

well see heres the thing you can play homebrews like emulators, along with other things on a 1.5 psp bu if you upgrade to a custom firmware like 3.51 M33. then you get the best of both worlds because you get to still play your emulators and things. you also get the latest sony firmware which you will need down the roded to play the umd games that require you to have 3.51. oh yeah and it allows you to your psp with the ps3.

Thanks for the reply, so I will be able to play my backed up ISO/CSO etc of the memory stick still with the 3.51 m33 firmware? aswell as emulators? is there any hindrance to the games that work?

if I can play all my backed up games and emulators, 1.5 is redundant compared to 3.51 m33? because i seee talk about restoring the previous firmware option?

I appreciate you sharing your knowledge, I feel so far behind on psp discussions and know how >.<

Btw if you could list your reccommended programs for a basic necessaity for the psp, I have SNes Megedriv, Mastersystem N64 emultors and a program called UMD emultor (which is unused due to querying firemware upgrade) ------- Thanks for any help and patience with these basic beginners questions.

also there is no longer a need for extra progarms to run emulators or your rip umd iso because the custom firmwares have a iso reader built in them. you can also go back to 1.50 if you ever need to do so.

So go with th 3.51 m33? any precautions, risk of killing my psp?

Are these firmwares really as good as they seem, i mean are psp 1.5's useless now? or are these firmwares needed primarilly for installing custom firmwares.

if its not too much trouble could you list me with essential psp programs to have, considering that I have the custom firmware 3.51 m33 ----- excluding emulators as the ones i have now should work correctly right? ---- thanks =)

well just make sure that you follow the readme to the T and everything should be fine. also you psp battery needs to be at 75% and the battery charger needs to be plugged in durning the whole updrade. you know what now that i think about it because you are new to this whole custom firmware maybe you should go with 3.40oe-a because the people that made 3.51 M33 have alot of updates that they have been comming out with as of lately.

if you are on 1.50 firmware or another oe firmware and want to take your psp up to 3.40oe-a. heres a guide to do so.
http://www.psphacking101.com/forum/viewt...ae61a4f371ec8fa
do not delete the eboot or anything leave it in the oe upmaker folder and add the other two as well.

Yes, go with 3.51 m33 or 3.40 OE-A; it's up to you.

The only risk is that, when you're upgrading to a custom firmware, there is a 2-5% chance of bricking your PSP. But that's the same risk when upgrading to an official Sony firmware. So it's safe, to some extent.

About version 1.5, I wouldn't really say that they're useless; many people still use this firmware. And yes, I believe the only way to upgrade to a custom firmware is from 1.5, unless you already have a custom firmware and just want to upgrade to a higher version.

Programs and emulators? Well, I don't know much about programs/applications but with emulators I use NesterJ for NES games, snes9xTYL for SNES games, and gpSP for GBA games. There's already an official(but hacked) PS1 emulator installed in these custom firmwares, as well as ISO loaders, so you don't need emulators for that.

Hope that helps! =)

Thanks, can i connect to my ps3 using the custom firmware you reccomended above 3.51 m33?

if i cannot is it not that worth it anyway? and so should stick to the one you reccomended 3.40?

also, sorry if im asking the most irritating questions, could i upgrade to higher custom firmwares from 3.40oe if it becomes a better choice in the future? --- all this is really appreciated thanks

I would recommend 3.40 OE as there's no real need to be at 3.51 yet and it's not as compatable as OE.

I couldn't do all this in M33 and modules aren't allowed either. (Screenshot, etc)

well with the 3.51 M33 firmware you will be able to connect a PSP system to a PS3 system via the Internet using Remote Play.

in terms Customizing menu's, background's, font etc, will it be possible in future releases on the 3.51 m33 firmware? or rather future firmwares. At the moment I believe functionality with the ps3 is more appealing, so long as my emulators and ISO's etc work, which has been thankfully confirmed as yes.

redice do you think I should go with the 3.51 m33 firmware if customization isnt as a priority to me to ps3 compatability? or would you still reccomend 3.40 OE as you did earlier? ----- In terms of updates I intend to continuosly follow the psp firmware, homebrew, emulator etc community and its progression, releases etc and catch up on everything to do with them all. (if relevant to making a decision)

yes you can delete the installation files off the memorystick. however you need to run this update for 3.51M33 http://www.psphacking101.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=10579

put this in your game folder of your psp and then go under the icon on the menu and run the M33 update.

once you are finish with that backup any important stuff like saves and iso's that are on your psp's memorystick to your computer desktop or something and then reformat your memory stick. then you should have a ISO folder on your memory stick and the iso/cso go in there.

You also wanna make sure you're in 1.50 kernel. Otherwise, you won't be able to run homebrew. (unless it's homebrew meant to run in 3.50 kernel. I don't know of any.)

Also, you guys both check this out - see this icon? -->

A example of the root of your memory stick is shown below...

All you need to play is your iso's and possibly a UMD. Place your ISO's in the ISO folder at the root of your memorys stick. If they don't play put a UMD in the drive and then try playing the ISO it should start up. And yes now that you are at a custom firmware you can format the memory stick, I would suggest doing that now.

Disregard the text that says "Do not put files in these folders" as I created this pic for a different thread thats why it says that.
