I haven't been able to find a definitive answer - if you install the wiikey on your wii, would you be able to play dvd movies on it? Does the wiikey enable that functionality?

http://www.wii-modchips.com/wiikey-modchip-faq.htm

Near the middle, the dude asks if:

Quote:
Is there any special upgrades you have to do after chipping the system to get it to play DVD movies?

No, the chips is up and running as soon as you have it installed. (Configuration is need for enabling Region override to play imported games PAL on NTSC and NTSC on PAL.)1st gen ModChips don't modify Wi OS and don't add new Channels so to play movies you have to use a GameCube homebrew application called MFE Mediaplayer that comes with the WiiKey Base Disc (disc used for configuring WiiKey options). MFE MediaPlayer runs a stripped down version of Linux on the Wii, but its navigation is easy and compatibility is great.
Has anyone tried playing DVDs on their wii after installing the wiikey?

Your supposed to be able to launch the MFE Media player from the Wiikey setup disc.

Now you can press R on the gamecube controller which is supposed to stop the disc from spinning eject the setup disc then put in the disc with movie files on it. Then press R again to load the DVD with movies on it.

Then load the movie VIA the DVD drive.

Below is a list of compatibility codecs used on the movie player.

http://www.wii-modchips.com/wiikey-modchip-faq.htm

I have no idea how well this works since I don't have a Wiikey. But with what i have read all you need to do is follow the steps above and it should work.

For those that don't have a Wiikey and would like to use this media player on their Modchip Wii system go to the link below. A guy has made a bootable disc creator of this Media Player that can run on other Modchiped Wii systems.

So do any of the modchips available play DVD movies for certain? Like do any just let you pop in a DVD and let you watch?

The only way to play a DVD is by using homebrew that was intended to play on the Game Cube. Some of these homebrew applications are able to play on the Wii system. But you will need a GC controller to navigate the menu.

I tested the above media player on multiple DVDs plus I made a Bootable AVI(Xvid) disc.

I have a WiiD Modchip and it seems to work well.

so is there a way to burn a dvd movie as a homebrew gamecube game? that would be pretty cool.

You can go to the link I provided above and download the mfe_disc_creator_1.0 program and do the below...

You can just run the bootable disc creator and make a bootable disc with the MVE Player on it. Then after it loads on your Wii you can swap the bootable disc with a DVD after making the swap hold down R on the GC controller and the Mve player will mount the DVD to play.

If you have AVI files you can place the AVI files into the Media folder and then run the bootable disc creator and it will create a bootable disc with the MVE player and AVI files on it that can be booted and played on the Wii.

You will need a Modchip to do this since it is Homebrew and a GC controller to navigate the menu.

I have tested both of these ways and it works. The only issue I have come to is playing a DVD. It seems you have to play each VOB file separate. Doesn't seem to be a way to start the DVD and let it play all the way through the full DVD. You have to select the next VOB after the 1 before has finished.

Maybe someone else with a little more experience with this program can give a solution on how to play the full DVD without selecting each VOB 1 after the other.

Is your GC controller wired or wireless? I tried with my wireless GC controller and the "R" button step doesn't seem to work.

You don't burn the dvd_root folder.

You place the media files in the dvd_root/Media folder.

Once you have the media files you want in that folder then you need to double click on whatever .cmd file that your Wii region is in.

create_disc_eur.cmd
create_disc_jap.cmd
create_disc_usa.cmd

The disc creator will then create an ISO file that you burn to your blank DVD media. Then play that disc in the Wii.

If you only want to watch DVD movies that have already been burned to other disc then skip the step of adding media files to the media folder and just choose 1 of the above .cmd files (The 1 that your region is in) and then just burn the ISO it creates. Now load the bootable disc in the Wii and once the MFE Player is loaded swap the bootable disc with a DVD and hold down R to mount the DVD.

This should work for all Modchips and without action replay. I have a WiiD and it worked flawlessly.

This is all explained in the READ ME file that came with the download.

Are you doing this with a wired or wireless controller? Just wondering cause it ain't working for me and a wireless controller.

App runs fine with the media in the appropriate folder but I have no appetite for re-burning loads of DVD avi's.

Got it sorted out. Turns out I have to "hold down" the controller for a few seconds, rather than just pressing the R/L buttons in order to mount and unmount the DVD's.

Duh! That's what they meant by "hold down".

First off.. yes, a chipped wii can play movies. I only use +R ridata and I burn all wii backups and movie backups at 16x. All my games work, pal and USA (I have the USA version).

Second off.. don't use your component cable when using MFE. The people who made that program didn't bother to make it work with a component cable very well. I would wait for future versions of MFE, or the standalone dvd player that some guys are working on.

Third.. being able to watch a movie strait from the wii menu will be a long time to come. You will have to buy a mod chip specifically designed to change the wii os. Current mod chips ONLY allow burned dvds to work. They just use the same technology as chipped gamecubes to get all the neat stuff to work.

Lastly.. if you don't have a chipped wii, send it into a professional to get it chipped. It will cost around 55 bucks + shipping both ways + the cost of the chip. Paying for someone else to do it is wise.... you don't want to have a 250$ paperweight (besides the cost of the low powered soldering iron, tiny solder, and tri-wing screwdriver can put you at 25 bucks anyway). Being able to backup your expensive games is a very nice feature.

I hope this helps you guys out.

after reading all of this. This seems like a very impracticle way to watch a movie. Is anybody that has done this using this as an everyday dvd player, or is more or less something ur just doing for the moment because it can be done?

this can play avi's, mp4's and a bunch of other file types so you don't have to go thru the conversion process
