Is it possible to mod your 360 only by replacing the disk drive? or do you have to mess around with the firmware. and if it is possible can it be detected and result in bieng banned from xbox live?

Yes, you can replace your disk drive with another but the new one will need to be flashed with your dvd drive key from the original one. Yes, you will need to be able to read and write your firmware in order to "mod" the 360. Yes you can be banned from Live. It is extremely important to only use backups of games you yourself already own and ripped yourself to prevent being banned from Live. And this still is no guarantee.
