I have yet to read anywhere that anyone has done this. What I think I'm going to try is to
1. Grind the top off a donor chip
2. Cut the trace off inside the chip where it tapers down to a thin trace
3. Unsolder and remove donor legs
4. Grind down the Wii chip
5. Solder on the legs back to the original pads and chip

Any reason not to go this way?
It would be real clean install and also after verifying the job a guy could use some epoxy to fill the grinded chip.

It seems to me like you're just adding extra steps. If you're grinding down your wii chip why not just reconstruct the leg with a piece of wire? After all, the donor leg and a piece of wire are essentially the same thing.

If you do go ahead and do it, post pics.

just that it would have all the bend in the perfect spots. also would have no flyaway strands of wire.

I don't know about anyone else but I didn't Mod my Wii to look at it and say wow such a nice sleek Modchip install.

Yeah nice clean soldering joints are good to have but cutting the legs from another chip to replace them with the ones Nintendo cut off?

I mean what the hell you going to do set it up on your Entertainment center disassembled just to show off your detailed Modchip instillation?

Give me a break the fact is your Wii is going to be put back together and chances are your never going to look at the install again for a very long time.

Just my 2 cents.

There are lots of thing we do that no one will ever see. Any job worth doing is worth doing right. The comments of "who cares how it looks" well if you don't care then that fine. Funny when a person post photos of their install comment always are from "Wow that looks clean" to "looks like butt"

When did I say the comment "who cares how it looks"?

I believe I said "Yeah nice clean soldering joints are good to have"

So I gave you my opinion on what I think about going to that great detail to Mod your Wii system. Frankly I don't care how you do it but you asked what we all thought and I gave you my opinion. If you don't want the negative opinions along with the positive opinions then maybe you shouldn't ask for it.

So everyone that didn't use legs from another chip didn't do the job right? Soldering wire to the cut pins will have the same results as doing the suggested steps above.

All I am saying is going to that great length to install a Modchip seems to be allot of unnecessary work not counting the risk your taking when soldering those little legs back onto the chipset.

Just my 2 cents worth.... Has anyone on here tried to do as the first post suggest? grinding the top of a chip???

We tried it in university, just to see what goes on. Its hard enough to grind enough off without physically damaging the IC (Integrated Circuit or "chip"), and even then it hardly worked for a long duration since the ceramic housing (chip casing), acted as a heatsink with the IC and sometimes burnt out.

Even with the new low profile IC's it is extremely hard to judge the depth to take off!

I would strongly advise AGAINST this method, as the risk (95% IMHO) far outways the success (5% IMHO).

I'd love to hear from people who are successful though! ;o)

There have been numerous users that have grounded the top of the chip down to solder to the cut pins. Below is a link that shows a few of them...

I used some solder to reconstruct the 3 legs. My friend tried using a piece of wire. It was just too difficult.

then i soldered to the now connected points!

working great!
