Should I use Memorex x16 DVD-R, or Sony x16 DVD-R? Sony is not working well for me, stuttering during cutscenes and whatnot. While Memorex is working beautifully. But will it mess up my laser? Which should I use?

Weird. Sony's work great for me. What's your Sony media ID?

What make/model is your drive?

Is your firmware up-to-date?

Don't use Memorex, period. They are badly made and will destroy your laser (dvd burner and ps2) over time. Also, even with seemingly great burns in some cases the poor dyes used to make the discs causes the data to deteriate and beomce unreadable.

Anyway, IMHO, you should be using Memorex OR Sony. Verbatim and Taiyo Yuden are the two best brands/manufacturers of media out there and is guarenteed to work provided you have correct firmware, which is up-to-date.

My Sony's are ID 16D1, my burner is a SONY AW-Q170A, I haven't updated the firmware because I'm afraid it could destroy it [Yes, this has happened to other people]. I would get Verbatim, but they're not exactly sold locally, I have to go quite a long way if I want them, I doubt I will find Taiyo Yuiden anywhere close. [Staples is the closest electronic shop, Best Buy and everything else are pretty far.]

EDIT: Btw, sometimes with the Sony disc, I could hear the laser grinding against the disc for awhile trying extremely hard to read it.

Firstly, let's go about updating your firmware. Yes, I'm perfectly aware that a bad flash can render a drive useless (i've been doing this for quite a while now). However, that only rarely occurs and when it does it down to user error. If you have the correct firmware and follow my steps you'll be fine.

Now, while looking for the firmware I came accross some info (from a valid source) which tells us your drive is infact a re-badged Optiarc AD-5170A. That leads to the next problem that I couldn't find any firmware for "your drive" as such, and only the Optiarc version.
Here arises the problem that you would be "crossflashing" your drive from the Sony model to the Optiarc model. This is dangerous and can result in a borked up drive.

If you want to crossflash then just ask and we can proceed.

Next, buy your media online from somewhere like http://www.rima.com

I think I know the source of where you found the firmware, I was about to update it yesterday from there, of course unknowing that I would be crossflashing. Sadly, I don't think I want to do it, I have no desire to put my burner in risk. And don't worry about the media, I'll just go to Best Buy, it's just that it's a distance is all.

EDIT: If anyone wanted to know, the Memorex DVD's are PRODISCF0x

Fair enough - cross-flashing isn't really something to take lightly if you don't know what you're doing or aren't confident doing it.

Post back how it goes if you try Verbatim media.

You could always try cleaning the laser too. You can either buy a laser cleaning disc or do it manually (which I find works better). If you'd like to try the latter, just ask how :-)

Yeah, don't worry I know how to do that, I was going to do that but I've been to lazy, but I'll get on it right now, and I don't plan on buying Verbatim in the next couple days, maybe in a week.

Alright, let me know if cleaning the laser helps. Just out of interest, how long have you had this drive for? In excess of a year?

I've only had the burner for about 3 months now so I still consider it new. Unfortunately cleaning the laser still had it stuttering excessively during cutscenes. I have tried discs burned on different speeds, still the same results, but with just a little less stuttering, but it still there. I had Utorrent running while some of the burns, and nothing else.
