ok I know this question has been used abused reused over and over but every thread seems to direct me into endless circles of dead links/contridictory info/poor explanations/blahblahblahblah...
So I apologize in advance but I have some very basic questions.
I have a 120GB HD just sitting around doing nothing, a "fat" ps2, and a crap load of ps2 games... I would like to put some of my games on the HDD and run them that way. Is this possible without modchips, software, etc etc? From what I have read it appears that I can do the following (based on a guide in this discussion section):
I can connect the HDD to my computer, format it for ps2 with some downloaded software, create ISO files of my ps2 discs, place those iso files on the HDD... connect my HDD to the ps2 and voila!?? Is it really that simple?
things needed: HD, ps2, and that loader software? can the loader software be downloaded from the internet and used without mod chips?
I get a hard drive, use the wiip program thing to format it to ps2 specs on my PC... I use the same program to make back up ISOs of my ps2 games and put them on my HDD... take the HDD out connect it to my ps2 network adapter, use HDloader or HDadvance to boot my HD??
is that right? so no mod chip, or swap method required? Only requirement is a HDadvance original, and i'll be able to play my ps2 backup isos? please correct me if i'm wrong

Anyway, yes, once you have the network adapter and the hard drive, you are on your way to success. You need to get the original hdloader program or similiar. It cannot be downloaded, those discs are factory pressed, so ripping would be impossible.
Once you have the hdloader program, I think it will prompt you to rip your game to the ps2 hard drive, and once it has done that, it will play games off the hard drive. No modchip or swap magic needed.
Please search youtube. I think there are a few videos demonstrating the beauty of hdloader.
thx for the reply, i dunno why my posts were duplicated so many times? lol
anyway, that sounds fantastic but i have another question. Instead of using the ps2 to copy my games to the hard drive, can i use my pc? how would that be done without a modchip/swap method???
I think there is a way to copy stuff from pc to the hard drive, but even if you get that far, you still need a special program like hdloader to boot the games off the hard drive.
hey i got a problem i have a 30 gb harddrive but when i formated it to ps2 with winhip the newset version but for some reason it says it is a 6gb harddrive wats wrong?
matty i believe I read somewhere that you have to have a minimum 40Gb HDD, so maybe thats the problem? I dunno for sure tho, I'm new at this too... check around, or try a larger capacity HDD? I'm using a 250Gb seagate, and I got it all set up earlier today. works great, and the HDD is only 70 bucks on ebay, possibly cheaper if you're patient.
